Michael B. Jordan's Boxing Shorts in CREED III Were Inspired By AKIRA

Here’s a cool little detail that you might have missed while watching Creed III. The boxing shorts that Adonis "Donnie" Creed is wearing in the boxing ring, were inspired by the classic 80s anime film Akira!

This was confirmed by the costume designer on the film, Lizz Wolf, and concept artist Raphael Phillips who shared some concept art and the finished product on Twitter.

They knew that Michael B. Jordan is a huge anime fan, so they said: “What if we pitch him some Akira-inspired shorts?’ We took inspo from the design lines of Kaneda’s classic fit, and he loved it.”

Of course, he loved it! I wasn’t really paying attention to the shorts while I was watching the movie, but seeing them here and seeing how exactly they were inspired by Keneda’s jacket in Akira is really cool!

Creed III was very much influenced by anime in a lot of ways, from the story to the way it was shot, especially in those fight sequences. This movie really is a live-action anime film, and I love it for that.

Jordan previously talked about his anime influence for Creed III and you can read all about that here.
