Michael Bay Had an Idea For THE ROCK 2 That Would Have Focused on Goodspeed and Mason on the Run
The Rock is hands down my favorite Michael Bay movie. I freakin' loved that film! Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery were great together in that movie, and now I miss Sean Connery. I had no idea that Bay had an idea for a sequel! /Film brought it to my attention and it would have picked up right where the first movie left off with Goodspeed and Carla (Vanessa Marcil) hitting the road with the microfilm that contained all the answers to the government secrets.
The idea that Bay had in mind for the sequel featured the government going after Goodspeed after he gets the microfilm and he would have gone to Mason for help escape the wrath of the government. The film is described as being more of a thriller than an action film as the two characters would have gone on the run together. For more information here's a more detailed description that was included in the audio commentary of The Rock:
"The sequel that I have in my mind for this movie is basically after Nic Cage is married to Carla, they drive off. Nic Cage has this microfilm of all this bad government confidential [info], like, who killed JFK? The government comes after Nic Cage with a vengeance. We’re talking out to kill. It turns into more of a thriller. Nic Cage has nowhere to turn, because he’s been stabbed in the back by the government, and they’re after him. Maybe he takes Carla, I’m not sure. Maybe they separate. I’d really like to separate Nic and Carla, and have Nic try to employ the help of Sean Connery. Basically, taking The Rock off exactly where it left off."
I actually would have loved to see that sequel! It's a bloody shame that it never happened. It seems like it would have been a blast! The idea for the ending of the film came from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Cage wasn't too thrilled with it initially:
"I was not a fan of the last scene in the movie when we shot it. I really didn’t want that scene in the movie. But it is a coda, and it is a tag to the whole thing. It smacks of sequel in some way. But then I saw the movie, and I could see how much fun the audience got from this scene. It didn’t offend me. It worked, somehow. That’s the great magic of Jerry Bruckheimer: he knows what he’s doing and what he wants."
At this point, it's safe to say that we'll never see a sequel to The Rock as Connery is probably just enjoying the hell out of retirement. Regardless, it's interesting to hear that there could've been a sequel and I like the initial concept of it.
Would you have like to see a sequel to The Rock?
