Michael Cera Was Depressed After Shooting SCOTT PILGRIM Says "I Could Have Kept Making That Forever"
Edgar Wright’s film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is such an insanely fun movie! There was just so much explosive energy in that film and it’s one of those films I revisit often when I feel like I need a little boost of energy in my life.
Michael Cera reprises his role of Scott Pilgrim in the awesome-looking anime series coming to Netflix, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. During a recent interview with GQ, Cera looked back on his fond memories of making the original film, saying:
“It was so much fun all the time because we just had the greatest vibe with everybody. That basically trickled down from Edgar, and the energy he was creating. We all got to rehearse together and spend a lot of time together before we even started making the movie.”
He went on to explain that after he finished making the movie he got a little depressed and said that he could’ve kept making Scott Pilgrim movies forever. He explained:
“By the end of the movie, I felt like, ‘This is my world. This is my group of friends. It feels like it’s always going to be this way.’ Honestly, I was a little depressed when we were done because it all just goes away, and you’re like, ‘Where did everybody go?’ You get used to that as you get older and as you’re acting for a while, but I was sad to lose it. I could have kept making that forever, even though it was exhausting.”
Cera worked on the film for nearly a year and with all of the fighting that had to be done, the cast had to go through some endurance training and fight choreography, which the actor said felt “unnatural.” He added:
“There were a couple of times where I got hurt… trying to block [a kick] over and over and find the right point in space to put your hand. One time I just went too low and received the full blow of this guy’s kick, one of the stuntmen. It’s an insane feeling you can’t believe is happening to your hand. You didn’t know you had these muscles in your hand and now they’re throbbing for like a week. Like a train hit me in the hand. It’s very weird.”
The eight-episode Scott Pilgrim Takes Off series is based on Bryan Lee O’Malley‘s series of Scott Pilgrim graphic novels and the original cast from Wright’s live-action film returned to voice their characters, which is so cool!
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’s returning cast also includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram, Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves, Johnny Simmons as “Young” Neil Nordegraf, Mark Webber as Stephen Stills, Mae Whitman as Roxie Richter, and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off premieres on Netflix on November 17.
