Michael Dougherty Teases a Shared Universe Between TRICK ’R TREAT and KRAMPUS and There's Already an Easter Egg

What if Sam from Trick ’r Treat and the terrifying Christmas demon from Krampus existed in the same universe? That's a crossover I've always thought would be awesome, and it turns out writer and director Michael Dougherty has already slipped a little connection between the two movies into one of his films.

During a Q&A at the FilmQuest Film Festival, Dougherty revealed that there's a hidden Trick ’r Treat Easter egg in Krampus: The Naughty Cut. And when the possibility of the two movies sharing a universe came up, he offered a wonderfully teasing response.

As someone who considers Trick ’r Treat my all-time favorite Halloween movie, I love the idea of Sam existing in a world where other ancient holiday spirits are lurking around, making sure people respect their traditions.

After all, Sam and Krampus have quite a bit in common. Both are supernatural enforcers of holiday rules, and neither is particularly forgiving when somebody breaks them.

The connection comes from a scene in Krampus involving Max, played by Emjay Anthony, who offers his cousins a shoebox filled with Halloween candy as a peace offering. Among the candy is a very familiar-looking lollipop belonging to Sam.

Dougherty explained: “As for Easter eggs between the films, there's actually a scene in Krampus that we initially cut, but we restored it in Krampus: The Naughty Cut, which came out on Blu-ray from Shout! Factory about three or four years ago.

“There's a scene where Emjay Anthony, who plays Max, presents his cousins with a box of Halloween candy as a peace offering. Inside that candy shoebox is Sam's lollipop. So do they exist in the same universe? Maybe.”

That's such a fun little detail! Sam's distinctive jack-o'-lantern lollipop is one of the most recognizable objects from Trick ’r Treat, and slipping it into Krampus creates a playful connection between Dougherty's two holiday horror movies.

The scene was originally cut from the theatrical version of Krampus, but it was restored for The Naughty Cut, the extended version released by Shout! Factory.

Of course, Dougherty's “Maybe” isn't confirmation that a crossover movie is in development, or even that the two films officially share continuity. For now, it's an Easter egg and a filmmaker having some fun with the idea.

But it's a pretty cool possibility to think about. Both movies explore the darker side of beloved holidays, drawing on folklore and traditions that existed long before their modern celebrations.

In Trick ’r Treat, Sam serves as the mysterious guardian of Halloween, punishing people who disrespect the holiday's rules. In Krampus, the title creature arrives when the Christmas spirit has been lost, bringing a nightmare of monstrous toys, sinister helpers, and supernatural punishment.

There's a natural connection between those concepts. You could easily imagine Sam and Krampus existing as different supernatural forces in a world where every holiday has its own ancient protector or monster.

I have to admit, the thought of Sam encountering Krampus and his army of murderous Christmas creatures sounds like a ridiculously fun horror movie.

It would also be interesting to see how the two characters might interact. Would they recognize each other as fellow guardians of their respective holidays? Would they get along? Or would a meeting between them turn into an all-out holiday horror showdown?

Dougherty didn't elaborate on any of those possibilities, but I would watch that crossover. Dougherty has such a distinct approach to holiday horror, blending creepy folklore, dark humor, practical monsters, and a genuine affection for the traditions he's twisting into nightmares. It's a big part of why I love both movies, and I'd be thrilled to see him revisit either world.

For now, though, Dougherty is still trying to get Trick ’r Treat 2 made, and this Easter egg is best enjoyed as a fun nod between his films rather than a promise of something bigger.

Still, next time you watch Krampus: The Naughty Cut, keep an eye out for that box of Halloween candy! Would you want to see Sam and Krampus share the screen in a holiday horror crossover?
