Michael Giacchino to Score Marvel and Sony's SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

One of the biggest disappointments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been its largely forgettable music. (We posted a video essay about this not too long ago.) For the most part, the music has been bland, boring, and nowhere near as iconic as these characters deserve. But there have been a few bright spots, including Michael Giacchino's score for Doctor Strange, and now there's some good news for those who are hoping that the future scores of the MCU will continue that upward trend: Giacchino will provide the score for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Giacchino was recently brought in to compose the score for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story after Alexandre Desplat dropped out, so it's a good time to be a Giacchino fan because he has his fingers in all kinds of geek-centric properties right now. I'm excited to see what he'll do with the Spidey score, and if you're also a fan of his, I'd encourage you to check out a piece I wrote about the music of Lost which includes videos of Giacchino conducting an orchestra playing tracks from the show.

Spider-Man: Homecoming officially wrapped production last month, and the film arrives on July 7, 2017.
