Michael Mann Wants to Adapt His HEAT Prequel Novel Into a Film and Also Make a Sequel
Michael Mann’s crime thriller Heat is such an incredible, masterfully-made film, and Mann has been teasing a prequel novel that he’s been working on for years. That novel has yet to be published, but in a recent interview with Deadline, the filmmaker says that he wants to adapt his novel into a movie. Oh, and if that’s not enough to get you excited, he also wants to make a sequel!
During the interview, Mann shared the following:
“It’s a stack about 10 inches high on my desk right now. We’re on it, and I’m putting time into that and a screenplay I can’t tell you about. But I absolutely want to make a movie of the Heat prequel, and a sequel.”
The story for the prequel novel is said to follow the “formative years of homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), Chris Shihirles (Val Kilmer), McCauley’s accomplice Nate (Jon Voight), and other characters” who were introduced in Mann’s film.
If Mann does end up making the films, for the prequel, would you want to see him cast the actors and de-age them, or recast them with younger actors? After seeing what Martin Scorsese did with The Irishman, I think I’d much rather have him recast younger actors in the roles. As for the sequel to Heat, it’s hard to tell what that story might be, but he could bring the surviving characters back in some way.
Heat is a classic. It doesn’t necessarily need a prequel or a sequel, but if Mann actually made these movies, the fans of his original movie would probably flock to watch them. I would! I’m curious to see what Mann is planning for these stories! Hopefully, he is able to get the film projects off the ground.
Mann is currently working on a series for HBO titled Tokyo Vice, which is about an American crime reporter working in Tokyo. That show stars Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe.
