Michel Gondry to Direct AS SHE CLIMBED ACROSS THE TABLE Which Tells the Story of a Love Triangle and Black Hole
Michel Gondry, the director of The Green Hornet, Be Kind Rewind, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, is set to helm As She Climbed Across the Table, which is an adaptation of the Jonathan Lethem novel. The project is being produced by Amazon Studios and Chernin Entertainment.
The story centers around “a love triangle that consists of a man, a woman, and, wait for it, a black hole. Mixing physics, alternate realities, and ideas of scientific objectivity with the quirkiness and obsessive nature of love, Table tells of a scientist Alice who, along with her colleagued, have created a black hole that they name Lack. Lack is a very selective about what it sucks into its void, accepting some objects, rejecting others. To Alice, this selectivity translates into an irresistible personality. To Phillip, Alice’s ex-boyfriend, the void becomes a rival lover, spurring on feeling of intense jealousy as he embarks on a nigh-impossible, and multi-universal, quest to win her back.”
This sounds like a fascinating and unique concept, and it’s the perfect kind of film project for Gondry to bring to life. This is the kind of crazy-ass story that Gondry will thrive in as he makes the film. I’m actually pretty damn curious to see how this story plays out.
Joe Penhall, the creator of Netflix’s incredible crime drama Mindhunter, is writing the script for the romantic sci-fi tale. Penhall also previously adapted Cormac McCarthy’s The Road which starred Viggo Mortensen.
