Michelle Rodriguez and Charlize Theron Shot Their Big FAST X Fight Scene Without a Director

In the trailer that was released for Fast X, there was footage in it featuring a brutal fight scene between franchise veterans Michelle Rodriguez and Charlize Theron. That fight looks like they are going to give each other a good ass-whooping.

Well, according to Rodriguez, that fight scene was shot without a director. The actress revealed this bit of info with Vanity Fair, saying they didn’t need one. She explained:

“Can I just tell you — no pun intended, but Charlize is a monster. We shot our [‘Fast X’] fight sequence with no director. Bro, like, hands down, drop mic, we nailed it. We were there, we don’t need [a director], let’s do this.”

So, why didn’t they have a director on set to shoot the scene? Well, there was a time during production when they didn’t have a director. Justin Lin started directing the movie, but he walked away from it only a few days into production due to creative differences. So that scene was shot between that time and the time they hired The Transporter and Now You See Me director Louis Leterrier. The actress added:

“We kept that train running until Louis came in and took over. And [Charlize] is a consummate professional, sharp elbows, her work ethic is beyond.”

Well, it looks like they made a badass fight sequence without a director that I’m sure fans are going to love. Leterrier previously revealed to Esquire that four days after getting the call from Universal he was on set shooting the movie. He said:

“I read the script four times on the plane, and I said I had some ideas, and they said, ‘Great, because the whole third act is changing. Can you rewrite it tonight?’ I was literally on no sleep. I’d been on no sleep for days.”

“Obviously, this was not going to be set in stone. But I was like, ‘Okay, yeah, I’ve got some ideas,’ and started writing. And obviously, since the third act was changing, I needed to change the first act. And when you rewrite the third act, and the first act, the second act has to go. So basically I had to on the fly rebuild the airplane.”

So, that must’ve been fun for him! When previously talking about the end of the film, Rodriguez shared that fans are going to be shocked by it.

“I think people are gonna be really, really surprised and we’re gonna get a lot of open mouths at the end of Fast X. Let’s just put it that way. It’s gonna be like, ‘Really? What?’ Like that! Like that’s how I was in theater. I was like, ‘Oh my god. What have we done?'”

She expanded on that in this recent interview:

“It is not really an ending, but it’s also like, ‘You can’t do this to us. We’re your die-hard fans, you can’t do this to us!'‘ You’re going to feel so cheated in a way, but then so gratified and excited about what’s to come. I can’t divulge more than that, but get ready for a shocker. After 23 years of shooting these things, it’s really tough at this stage to shock me, and they got me good.”

We’ll find out how the movie ends soon enough when it hits theaters on May 19th!
