MICKEY 17 Director Bong Joon Ho Would Only Make a Franchise Film If It’s an ALIEN Musical

Bong Joon Ho, the director behind Parasite and the upcoming Mickey 17, isn’t exactly itching to jump into the world of franchise filmmaking… unless, of course, it involves a Xenomorph belting out show tunes.

Bong was recently asked about jumping into franchise project and he told the Los Angeles Times: "I'm not drawn to franchise films, but I did think at one point that I would like to do an Alien film,” before adding… "An Alien musical."

I imagine he’s half-joking there. But the idea of Bong Joon Ho directing a sci-fi horror musical set in the Alien universe is bizarrely interesting. While something like this will never happen, your imagination can no run wild with what an Alien musical would look like.

For now, though, Bong is focused on Mickey 17, his adaptation of Edward Ashton’s novel. The film stars Robert Pattinson as an “expendable,” a worker whose consciousness is uploaded into a new body every time he dies—until two versions of him exist at the same time.

The book Mickey 7 has a sequel, but don’t expect Bong to dive into franchise territory there, either. "When I was having a Zoom talk with Ed [Ashton], and he was telling me about it, and you know, he's such a great, fascinating writer, I would love to take on the challenge but to be honest, I have a plethora of new, weird ideas that I want to tackle, so I would like to move on to those rather than a sequel," he explained.

So while the idea of a Bong Joon Ho-directed Alien musical will forever live in our imaginations, at least we know he has plenty of other weird, original ideas still coming our way.

Now, I’ll leave you with this:
