Microsoft Officially Unveils the Xbox Series S

A leaker recently dropped a commercial (shown below) that shows off the design for the Xbox Series S. This is a console that was rumored, but not officially announced by Microsoft, that would be a cheaper, all digital version of the Xbox Series X.

Well, this seems to have forced Microsoft’s hand as this morning, they confirmed the Xbox Series S with an image of the very slim console and even gave us a price tag of $299. That’s a pretty good price tag for a next-gen system. Sadly, we don’t know anything else about the console unless we believe the trailer this leaker shared is accurate. In that case, we know a little bit more.

If the leak is to be believed (and I think it’s proved pretty accurate so far), then the Series S will feature a custom 512 GB SSD (which many will agree is too small), resolutions of 1440p at 120 FPS, DirectX ray tracing, variable refresh rate, 4K upscaling for games, and 4K streaming capabilities. Just as everyone has imagined, this fits pretty well in line with expectations of a weaker Series X that’s easier to purchase.

Now, as I said, the Series S will only cost $299 and is set to release this holiday season. Could this $299 indicate a price tag for the Series X though? Many people, including myself, have long since speculated that the Series X would cost $500. Some recent rumors and leaks from other companies have indicated it could be $600. Could it be less than either of these though?

I think it would be reasonable to guesstimate that the Series X could cost as low as $400-450. I wouldn’t hold my breath for that price range, but it’s something where if it did come out to be there, I wouldn’t be blown away. I personally still think it’s going to be around $500.

What do you think of the Series S? Will this be your preferred console or are you needing the power of its big brother, the Series X?
