MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #42 Stops When Things Get Good

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #42 dropped today, and I’ve decided that comics are too short. They give you just enough to pull you in and then they cut you off before you get to the best part. MMPR #42 continues the Necessary Evil storyline, and it ends just when things start getting good. If you haven’t read the issue yet, stop here, go get a copy, and then come back.

We start off with the panels from the preview where the Rangers are defeating some new Putties while Dayne observes them. Then we have the panels we saw with the Blue Emissary and the Omega Rangers. It shows that they’re trying to convince Garrison Vox to join them, but he’s refusing, saying that they’re just scared because he’s just as strong, if not stronger, than them. This brings in the interesting idea that maybe the Power Rangers aren’t as good as we want to believe. I’ll be honest, this issue also has me questioning the Blue Emissary. What happened to Red and Yellow? Did I just miss that explanation somewhere? I’m becoming wary of him.

Well, anyway. After Garrison is put back in containment, we learn more about Kiya, the Blue Omega Ranger, and we hear an adorable story about her brother who apparently died when the Grid shattered and gave her powers. This is touching and provides a moment not only for Trini to bond with her, but we also get to bond with her.

Cut to Kimberly and Tommy running on the Great Wall of China. Is it weird that I’m extremely bothered by the simple fact that Tommy is wearing a lot of green now that he’s the White Ranger? The scene doesn’t really do much except remind us that the White Ranger powers give Tommy a lot of awesome power. I imagine that this is trying to set something up.

Back to the Omega Rangers. Their robot(?) friend Xi has found a level six reading which we’re led to believe is rather high. Turns out this signal is coming from Breel which is the planet where the Rangers swapped colors and powers. That was a fun couple of issues. Well, they’re told that their new powers are strong enough where that won’t happen again. They’re also informed that a bunch of bad guys are getting together for some party. The rangers are given some fancy clothes to wear to the party and they have to sneak in after taking down some guards. We then see a few villains from other series such as Darkonda from In Space and Elgar from Turbo. These are fun cameos and there are more than the two I mentioned for fans to enjoy. At the party, Queen Adriyel makes an appearance and has Attraxzine’s ship destroyed by a very powerful weapon before revealing that the party is a chance for the other villains and the Power Rangers to pledge their loyalty to her.

Back at Ernie’s Juice Bar, Kimberly and Billy are talking a little about the aforementioned jog in China and about how they probably should move on from wanting to see Jason, Trini, and Zack again. We then see all the Rangers getting a pep talk from Tommy who is now in white and trouble shows up on the news, so off they go! They arrive at the scene where Dayne is and their Blade Blasters won’t function because of a micro-yield EMP. The coolest part of this issue is Dayne standing there with two laser swords saying, “This isn’t going to be a fair fight.” That’s just awesome! Is #43 out yet?

What did you think of this issue? How do you think the Rangers will fair against Dayne? What will happen to the Omega Rangers? Is there more to Blue Emissary than he’s letting on?
