Mike Flanagan Has a Killer Idea for a “Really Scary” Jurassic World Sequel

Give Jurassic World to Mike Flanagan and let the man cook.

The filmmaker behind some of the best modern horror projects out there recently revealed that he has an idea for a potential Jurassic World movie, and it sounds like exactly the kind of dinosaur nightmare fans have been wanting to see for years.

During a Reddit AMA last week, Flanagan was asked which franchise he would love to direct. His answer opened the door to one very cool possibility: a darker, scarier, more suspense-driven entry in the Jurassic franchise.

Flanagan explained that there was a time when he thought he would stay away from sequels and franchise filmmaking.

That way of thinking has changed over the years, and he now sees the fun in jumping into a world that already has a strong legacy behind it.

He wrote, “I really love getting to play in a world I know and respect and adore and put my own spin on it.”

That’s a great way to look at it, especially when talking about a franchise like Jurassic World. This is a series built on wonder, danger, science gone wrong, and giant prehistoric monsters that can eat people in one bite.

There’s a lot of room for a filmmaker with Flanagan’s horror instincts to come in and shake things up.

When Flanagan brought up the Jurassic franchise, he made it clear that his version wouldn’t be another standard blockbuster adventure. He wants to push the horror angle.

He wrote, “A JURASSIC movie could be a blast too; I’d want to go really scary with it. A true dinosaur horror film would be a blast.”

That sounds awesome. The original Jurassic Park had some genuinely terrifying moments, from the T. rex attack in the rain to the raptors stalking kids through the kitchen.

The franchise has always had horror baked into its DNA, but later movies leaned harder into action spectacle.

A Flanagan-directed Jurassic World movie could bring the fear back in a big way. Imagine a smaller group of characters trapped in a restricted zone, hunted by dinosaurs they can barely see, with the tension slowly tightening until everything explodes.

Flanagan knows how to build dread around the great characters he introduces in his stories.

As of October 2026, Universal Pictures hasn’t formally dated a follow-up to Jurassic World Rebirth.

The movie was directed by Gareth Edwards and starred Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali.

The story followed a team that travels into a restricted region to collect dinosaur DNA for research tied to a potentially groundbreaking medical treatment. David Koepp wrote the screenplay.

Jurassic World Rebirth continued the franchise that started with Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park in 1993.

The next movie hasn’t been announced yet, but Flanagan’s comments give fans a fun idea to obsess over while waiting for Universal to reveal the next chapter.

To be clear, Flanagan’s comments don’t mean he’s involved with the franchise. Right now, this is just a cool idea from a filmmaker who clearly understands the appeal of the Jurassic universe.

Still, it’s hard not to get excited about the possibility. Flanagan taking on Jurassic World could give the franchise a fresh jolt. Delivering a story where every shadow in the jungle feels like it might have teeth.

That said, I also really like the path Flanagan is currently on. As cool as it would be to see him unleash full dinosaur horror on the big screen, I still want him to get his Dark Tower project off the ground.

That feels like one of those dream projects that could be incredible if he’s given the space to bring it to life properly.

Still, if Universal ever wants to make a Jurassic World sequel that actually scares the hell out of people, Flanagan is a name worth calling.
