Mike Flanagan Looking To Cast Summer H. Howell in HIs Series Adaptation of Stephen King's CARRIE
Carrie is getting a new adaptation thanks to horror maestro Mike Flanagan at the helm, and we’ve just learned that rising star Summer H. Howell will potentially be stepping into the blood-soaked spotlight.
Deadline reports that Howell, best known for Hunter Hunter and her breakout at age 8 in Curse of Chucky, is in negotiations to play the title role in Flanagan’s upcoming Carrie series for Prime Video. If the deal goes through, this would mark her first lead role in a television series.
The project is a new take on Stephen King’s iconic novel, is being described as a reimagining of the story of Carrie White, the shy high school outcast raised by her overbearing mother. But this version adds a few new elements to the story.
After the death of her father, Carrie is thrust into the harsh world of high school, caught in the middle of a bullying scandal while strange telekinetic powers begin to surface. It’s familiar territory, but with Flanagan involved, expect a fresh emotional depth and psychological complexity.
The series is written and directed by Flanagan, who also executive produces alongside longtime collaborator Trevor Macy. Filming is set to kick off in May up in Vancouver.
For horror fans, Flanagan’s name is a reassuring one. With titles like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and Doctor Sleep under his belt, he's known for blending supernatural terror with human drama, and Carrie offers fertile ground for both.
Of course, Sissy Spacek’s chilling, Oscar-nominated performance in Brian De Palma’s 1976 film still casts a long shadow. Chloë Grace Moretz took the mantle in the 2013 remake. If Howell signs on, she’ll be the third major actress to take on the role and she’ll bring fresh energy to this modern retelling.
The Carrie series is part of Prime Video’s broader push into iconic female-led properties. The streamer recently cast Lexi Minetree as Elle in its Legally Blonde prequel, and is reportedly in talks with Sophie Turner for the Tomb Raider reboot.
With production around the corner and Flanagan steering the ship, this could be one of the year’s most talked-about horror series. Let’s hope the prom decorations are flame-retardant.
