Mike Flanagan Teases a “Very Cool and Unexpected” Way Into Henry Cavill’s WARHAMMER 40,000 Series
Bringing the massive universe of Warhammer 40,000 to live-action television is no easy task, but Mike Flanagan and Henry Cavill seem to have figured out an interesting way to tackle it. Flanagan recently teased that the upcoming Prime Video series has found a surprising entry point into the franchise, and he's having a blast bringing it to life.
While speaking with Deadline, Flanagan was asked about his involvement in the highly anticipated adaptation, but he wasn't about to spoil anything.
“Henry Cavill would be furious if I divulged anything about what we’re working on,” he quipped. “All I can say is that Warhammer is a fascinating world. The challenge, as anyone familiar with it knows, is finding a way in – it’s so big. There are 700 novels, discounting the [table top] game, the interactive elements and so much of the rest of the lore.”
That's a lot of amount of material to work with, and figuring out where to begin is probably one of the biggest challenges facing the creative team. Fortunately, Flanagan says they've cracked that problem.
He revealed that the show has found “a very cool and unexpected on-ramp into it, which I think is very exciting. I’m sworn to secrecy on all of it, but I’m having the time of my life working on it.”
That's an interesting tease, especially considering how many different stories, factions, and characters exist in the Warhammer 40K universe. Whatever direction they're taking, it sounds like they're approaching the material from an angle fans might not expect.
Cavill previously shared his own update on Instagram, confirming that he's still set to star in the live-action Warhammer 40,000 series while revealing that the creative process has made some significant progress.
“Importantly, some of you have been asking if I will still be starring in the lead role in the live action TV series. Rest assured, I most certainly will! Who that character is, however, shall remain a secret for now!”
Cavill has been actively involved in developing the adaptation since Amazon officially came aboard in 2024. As a longtime fan of the tabletop game and its massive mythology, he's helping shape the project creatively rather than simply showing up to play a character.
The actor also addressed collaborating with Flanagan on the story, saying: “We have already been working with [Mike Flanagan] to craft the creative, and we're making some considerable advances in story.”
Flanagan's involvement is exciting given his work on The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and Doctor Sleep. He knows how to create compelling characters in horrifying situations, which could work incredibly well in a franchise whose famous motto is, “In the grim darkness of the far future, there is nothing but war.”
Cavill also revealed that United Artists has joined the production. The decision came naturally after his experience working with the studio on Highlander, giving the Warhammer 40,000 adaptation another creative partner as development moves forward.
Meanwhile, a recent financial report from Games Workshop confirmed that the series has completed its initial story outlines. With that work finished, Flanagan is expected to begin writing the scripts next.
The report also reaffirmed that Cavill and Vertigo Entertainment remain involved, with the project continuing under Amazon's long-term agreement to bring the franchise to the screen.
Of course, the biggest mystery is still who Cavill will play. There are plenty of iconic characters he could bring to life, and fans have been throwing around possibilities ever since the adaptation was first announced.
Cavill certainly understands the source material while Flanagan knows how to make audiences care about characters caught in terrifying circumstances. That's a pretty great combination for a universe filled with brutal warfare, religious fanaticism, monstrous aliens, and cosmic horror.
There's still no release date or confirmed story details, but the fact that the creative team has found its way into this enormous franchise and is making real progress is encouraging. It’ll be interesting to see what they have planned.
I can't wait to find out what Cavill and Flanagan are cooking up for Warhammer 40,000.
