Mike Flanagan Teases More CARRIE After Season 1 Finale and Wants to Explore Its Mysterious New Characters

Mike Flanagan might have a lot more planned for Stephen King's Carrie than we originally thought. The filmmaker's new horror series has arrived on Prime Video, and its surprising finale opens the door to a much bigger story, one that could take the franchise into some pretty interesting territory.

Flanagan has confirmed that he'd love to explore the mysterious women introduced toward the end of the series, and he's already thinking about what their presence could mean for the future of Carrie.

Flanagan's adaptation makes some major changes to King's classic horror novel. The story still follows Carrie White, a bullied teenage girl with terrifying telekinetic abilities, but this version brings the story into the modern world, incorporating social media and giving Carrie a very different fate.

Unlike the novel, which ends with Carrie's death, the Prime Video series allows her to survive. That's a pretty significant change, especially when you consider the mysterious new characters introduced in the final episodes.

Among them is a group of women led by a character played by Kate Siegel. We don't learn much about who these women are or what they're capable of, but their introduction suggests that Carrie might not be as alone in the world as she once believed.

Speaking with ScreenRant, Flanagan explained that while he intentionally left the door open for more stories, his main concern was making sure Carrie's journey received the attention it deserved.

"As far as whether it could lead to something else down the line, my priority was always to get to the last frame of this season and honor the character and honor the arc and show the tip of the iceberg of that bigger world,"

That bigger world is easily one of the most intriguing aspects of the finale. Rather than simply retelling King's familiar story, Flanagan has introduced the possibility of exploring other people with extraordinary abilities.

He continued: "I do think there's a ton of potential for more, especially with those characters. I think there are so many of those women who we meet, especially in 7 and 8, who I would love to know a lot more about. So I hope so, but I'm just worried about surviving season 1. We'll see how it's received."

It's an interesting direction for the franchise, especially since Flanagan has previously expressed interest in turning Carrie into a three-season story that would extend well beyond the events of King's original novel.

Of course, Prime Video hasn't officially renewed the series for Season 2, so there's no guarantee we'll get to see where Flanagan wants to take these characters. However, he's not the only one interested in continuing the story.

Summer H. Howell, who plays Carrie White, is also excited about the possibility of returning, particularly if it means exploring Carrie's relationship with other women who possess supernatural abilities.

"That'll be fun for the viewers and me to just get to see so many more women represented, and these powers are fun to play with. I hope she can also come back to the lighter version of herself, how she went into school with her openness and her eagerness for the world and exploring."

That could make for a compelling second chapter. Carrie has spent most of her life being mistreated, feared, and isolated. Giving her the opportunity to meet people who understand her abilities could completely change her outlook on life.

It would also be interesting to see whether these mysterious women want to help Carrie, recruit her for something bigger, or have their own questionable motivations.

Flanagan has already shown that he's willing to take some major creative liberties with King's material, and the finale gives him plenty of room to tell an original story while keeping Carrie White at its center.

For now, everything depends on whether Prime Video decides to move forward with another season.

Personally, I'd love to see Flanagan get the chance to explore this larger supernatural world. He's already taken one of King's most recognizable horror characters and given her a new future. Seeing what happens when Carrie discovers others like herself could be a pretty cool way to continue the story.

The bigger question is whether Carrie will finally find people she can trust, or whether she's about to discover an entirely new set of problems.

Carrie is now streaming on Prime Video.
