Mike Flanagan’s CARRIE Renewed for Season 2 at Prime Video!
Carrie White’s story is far from over! Prime Video has officially renewed Carrie for a second season, giving Mike Flanagan the chance to continue his twisted new take on Stephen King’s classic horror novel.
The renewal comes just two weeks after the eight-episode first season premiered, and fans have plenty of reasons to be excited about what comes next.
Flanagan originally envisioned a three-season story for Carrie, so this renewal puts him another step closer to bringing his full vision to life. Considering how the first season ended, it’s great to know we’ll actually get to see where he’s taking these characters.
The series has been a major success for Prime Video and the renewal also continues Prime Video’s recent streak of bringing back its young adult series, including Elle, Off Campus, Every Year After, and Sterling Point.
“Carrie is connecting with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation altogether — including young adults and international audiences, with particular strength among female viewers,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios.
“It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of the iconic IP has real breadth. We’re excited by where he and Stephen plan to take the story.”
The first season stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a sheltered teenager raised by her controlling mother, Margaret, played by Samantha Sloyan. Following her father’s sudden death, Carrie enters public high school, where she faces vicious bullying, social media humiliation, and the terrifying discovery that she possesses telekinetic powers.
Flanagan took some major creative liberties with King's original story, particularly with the ending. Instead of dying from stab wounds as she does in the novel, Carrie survives the bloody prom night massacre and escapes town with her friend Emaline, played by Thalia Dudek. Where they're headed remains a mystery.
That change opens the door for Flanagan to explore what happens to Carrie beyond the events fans have known for decades.
“For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next,” Flanagan said.
Howell is confirmed to return for Season 2, with Dudek also expected to reprise her role. Other potential returning cast members include Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Josie Totah as Tina Blake, and Kate Siegel as Adelaide, all of whom survived the prom night carnage.
The first season's cast also featured Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Arthur Conti as Billy, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
Flanagan will continue serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, with King also executive producing. Flanagan directed four episodes of the first season, including the premiere and finale.
The Season 2 announcement promises new revelations, major developments for the characters, and some shocking surprises. King is also looking forward to seeing where this version of his story goes.
“I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White,” King said. “Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling.”
Carrie is also part of Amazon MGM Studios' efforts to develop new projects from MGM's library following Amazon's acquisition of the studio in 2022. Along with the Legally Blonde prequel Elle, it's one of the first television projects to emerge from that initiative, and both have now secured second seasons.
I'm really excited that Carrie is coming back! I loved what Flanagan did with the first season, especially how he reworked King's story while keeping the horror and emotional weight that make it so effective.
The decision to let Carrie survive was a great creative choice, and now there's an opportunity to take her story somewhere completely unexpected.
Flanagan has already shown how well he understands King's work, and having King involved in expanding this story makes the whole thing even more exciting. I'm looking forward to seeing what they have planned for Season 2, especially now that Carrie is free from her old life and heading into an uncertain future.
