Mike Flanagan’s New Hoarder Horror Movie ROT With Matthew Lillard Sounds Seriously Disturbing

Hoarder horror. Those two words fit together almost too well. Now we’re getting a movie ready to dig into all the grime, psychological damage, and potentially disgusting places that combination can take us.

The film is Rot, a new horror project produced by Mike Flanagan, and it already has a killer cast lined up with Matthew Lillard, Amber Midthunder, and Cooper Koch set to star.

Flanagan is currently coming off the reveal of the new trailer for his Prime Video Carrie series, and there’s some crossover between that project and Rot. Lillard and Midthunder both appear in Carrie, playing Carrie White’s high school principal and teacher, respectively.

Koch joins them after earning an Emmy nomination for his performance as Erik Menendez in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

The movie will mark the feature directorial debut of Alexandra Magistro, though she’s already spent years working in the horror genre.

Magistro has been an executive at Flanagan’s Red Room Pictures for nearly a decade and serves as an executive producer on Flanagan’s upcoming The Exorcist: Martyrs. She’s also a writer and producer on Carrie.

Rot is based on a Black List script written by Geo Bradley, and its premise sounds like it could get seriously nasty.

The story follows “an antisocial man suffering from obsessive compulsions who is haunted by the death of his hoarder mother. The man takes on work as a trauma cleaner in hopes of facing his past, but the job soon begins to infest and unravel his mental state.”

Trauma cleaning already involves dealing with the aftermath of deaths, accidents, and other situations most people would rather never see.

Turning that job into the foundation for a psychological horror movie about grief, compulsions, and a hoarder mother opens the door to all kinds of disturbing imagery.

Flanagan producing is another reason to keep an eye on this one, especially with Magistro stepping into the director’s chair after working alongside him for years. Rot has assembled an impressive group for what sounds like one seriously gross horror movie.

There’s no release date yet, but Rot is officially on our radar. Hoarder horror with trauma cleaning and a deteriorating mental state? Yeah, this could get wonderfully messed up.
