Mike Flanagan’s THE EXORCIST Reboot Wraps Filming as Scarlett Johansson Leads an Incredible Cast
Mike Flanagan has officially finished filming his highly anticipated The Exrocist movie, and with an ensemble cast led by Scarlett Johansson, the project is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about horror movies heading toward theaters.
Flanagan shared the news on Instagram, confirming that production has wrapped on the film after cameras started rolling earlier this year in March. Alongside a simple image of a purple cross, the filmmaker celebrated the milestone with a heartfelt message:
“That’s a wrap. What an incredible experience. Forever grateful to this extraordinary cast and crew!”
The upcoming movie marks the seventh installment in The Exorcist franchise and represents a fresh start for the long-running horror series.
While details remain largely under wraps, the story centers on Johansson’s character, a rookie detective who comes face-to-face with a terrifying evil while investigating a case that spirals into something far beyond explanation.
Johansson also reportedly plays the mother of a character portrayed by Jacobi Jupe, while Chiwetel Ejiofor is said to be playing an ex-convict who becomes a priest. The cast is packed with talent, including Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Sasha Calle, John Leguizamo, Hamish Linklater, and Carla Gugino.
As fans of Flanagan's work would expect, several familiar faces from his previous projects are also along for the ride. Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, and Robert Longstreet are all part of the ensemble.
The film's cinematography is being handled by Michael Fimognari, who has collaborated with Flanagan on several previous projects. With Flanagan writing, directing, and producing, the filmmaker has full creative control over this new vision for the iconic horror property.
This reboot arrives after a significant shake-up behind the scenes. It replaces the previously planned Exorcist: Deceiver, which was scrapped in 2024. That project had already undergone changes after David Gordon Green stepped away following the disappointing reception of The Exorcist: Believer.
What makes this new chapter particularly interesting is Flanagan's approach to the material. While promoting The Life of Chuck, he spoke about how determined he was to land the project and explained that he saw an opportunity to take the franchise in a different direction rather than leaning heavily on familiar callbacks and nostalgia.
That philosophy should come as welcome news for longtime horror fans. Flanagan has built a reputation for bringing emotional depth and fresh ideas to established genres, and many are eager to see what he can do with one of horror's most legendary franchises.
Now that filming has wrapped, the countdown officially begins. Universal Pictures has set The Exorcist reboot for release on March 12, 2027, and with Flanagan at the helm and Johansson leading an impressive cast, this is sure to be one of the biggest horror events on the horizon.
