Mike Mignola Says The HELLBOY Reboot Will Be More Like a Horror Film and The B.P.R.D. Will Be in it

We've got some new information for the Hellboy reboot to share with you today thanks to creator Mike Mignola. First of all, the movie is no longer being called Hellboy: The Rise of the Blood Queen. It's simply just going to be called Hellboy.

This new version of the film is said to be a lot closer to the comics than the previous films. What's interesting about this new film, though, is that Mignola won't be as involved with it as much as he was with the first movies. While talking to Newsarama, he explained:

"I was super involved Guillermo del Toro’s movies way more than this one. In those I worked in pre-production and I was on set a lot of the time. As time went on, he and I had different ideas on what should happen.
"And this new movie, I don’t have much hands-on involvement. I’m not doing any concept art. I am doing consulting, but I think from day one in discussions about the look and feel of this new movie, the director seems to be very much closer to the tone of the vision I wanted it to be."

Well, it looks like we have our reason as to why Mignola opted to reboot the film franchise instead of continuing to work with Guillermo Del Toro. They just ended having a different vision of how the movies should be. Del Toro was taking it in a more fantasy type direction, where it seems like Mignola wanted it to be more of a gritty horror film. He says that director Neil Marshall is taking it in that "darker and more scary" direction.

"Where Hellboy II: The Golden Army was a light fantasy film, this will be very much darker – close to a horror film. I’ve met some people doing pre-production, and I visit the person doing the creature effects. I’m very happy with what I’ve seen so far: I give them my two cents, then get out of the way. But I’m very happy they’re asking my opinion, and giving me opportunities to solve certain creative problems."

In case you were wondering if the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) will also be a part of the movie, you'll be happy to hear that they will, but they won't be the primary focus. Mignola says:

"The B.P.R.D. figures into the movie. I don’t want to say who is and who isn’t in the movie. I think it’s fair to say, however, that the primary focus is Hellboy and not a B.P.R.D. team movie."

I actually like the fact that we are going to get a completely different Hellboy movie. I'm such a big fan of the dark horror elements of the comic and it will be great to see that really explored in this new film.

The movie starts shooting next month and so for it stars David HarbourMilla Jovovich, and Ian McShane.
