Miley Cyrus Returns as Hannah Montana in Trailer for Disney+ 20th Anniversary Special

Fans who grew up watching Miley Stewart juggle normal teenage life with pop stardom are about to get a serious hit of nostalgia. Miley Cyrus is revisiting one of the most iconic roles of her career for the upcoming Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special, and the first trailer offers a heartfelt preview of what’s coming to Disney+ later this month.

As a father of three girls, I spent a lot of time watching Hannah Montana, and they are very excited about this Anniversary Special. In fact, my oldest daughter called me telling me that I better write a report for the news so here we are.

The special premieres on March 24, exactly 20 years after Hannah Montana first debuted on Disney Channel in 2006. The trailer opens with Cyrus setting the tone for the emotional reunion, saying, “I’ll be getting emotional.”

The anniversary celebration was filmed in front of a live studio audience and brings fans back into the world of Hannah Montana in a pretty cool way.

Some of the show’s most recognizable locations have been recreated for the special, including the Stewart family living room and the legendary Hannah Montana closet that once held Miley’s secret pop star identity.

Along with revisiting the classic sets, the event also features an in-depth interview with Cyrus conducted by Alex Cooper, host of the popular Call Her Daddy podcast. The conversation digs into the legacy of the show and includes never-before-seen archival footage from the original production. Cooper also serves as the host of the special.

Cyrus has previously spoken about how meaningful the series remains to her and the fans who grew up alongside it.

Hannah Montana will always be a part of who I am. What started as a TV show became a shared experience that shaped my life and the lives of so many fans, and I’ll always be thankful for that connection.

“The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I’m very proud of. This ‘Hannahversary’ is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who’ve stood by me for 20 years.”

Hannah Montana originally ran for four seasons from 2006 to 2011 and quickly became one of Disney Channel’s biggest hits. The series followed Miley Stewart, a teenager living a double life as a global pop star. The show’s popularity even led to the theatrical release of Hannah Montana: The Movie in 2009, which pulled in more than $155 million worldwide.

My oldest daughter actually did a video review of that movie for GeekTyrant after we saw it.

The anniversary special is produced by HopeTown Entertainment and Unwell Productions. Ashley Edens serves as showrunner, while Miley Cyrus, Tish Cyrus-Purcell, Alex Cooper, and Matt Kaplan are executive producers.

For longtime fans, this special looks like a fun return to the world that helped define a generation of Disney Channel viewers.
