MIRACULOUS: TALES OF LADYBUG & CAT NOIR Is Getting a Live-Action Series

Ladybug and Cat Noir are making the jump from animation to live-action! The hit animated superhero series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir is officially getting a live-action TV adaptation, and the creative team is looking to bring a more mature take on the beloved characters to the screen.

The new series is being developed by See-Saw Films, the production company behind Slow Horses and Heartstopper, in partnership with Miraculous Corp. The goal is to introduce Ladybug and Cat Noir to a “broad and older audience” while delivering something that longtime fans of the franchise can get excited about.

Created by Thomas Astruc, Jeremy Zag, and Nathanaël Bronn, Miraculous debuted in 2015 and has become a massive international hit, running for six seasons with a seventh on the way.

The story follows Marinette, a kindhearted Parisian teenager who struggles with the idea that she needs to be perfect to earn someone's love, especially when it comes to her crush, Adrien.

What most people don't know is that Marinette secretly protects Paris as the superhero Ladybug, battling the villainous Hawk Moth alongside her crime-fighting partner, Cat Noir.

Of course, the fun of the series comes from the fact that Cat Noir is actually Adrien, something Marinette has no idea about. That complicated romance, mixed with superhero action and secret identities, has been a major part of the show's appeal.

For the live-action adaptation, the creative team wants to explore those relationships with a little more emotional weight while still delivering the superhero spectacle fans expect.

Maria Nicholson, executive producer at See-Saw Films, explained to Variety: “Miraculous has always been, at its heart, a story about the distance between who we are and who we let people see. Live action gives us the space to really feel that—to let it breathe, to let it hurt.”

Nicholson went on to share what the team hopes to accomplish with the adaptation: “We’re aiming to build something with the emotional intimacy of a great romance and the scale of a genuinely epic superhero story. I think audiences are going to fall in love with these characters all over again.”

That's an interesting direction for the franchise, especially since the complicated relationship between Marinette and Adrien is already one of its biggest selling points.

Emme Hoy, whose previous credits include Sweetpea and Renegade Nell, has been tapped to lead the adaptation. No directors or cast members have been announced yet, so we're still waiting to find out who will bring Marinette, Adrien, and the rest of the characters to life.

See-Saw Films has a solid track record with character-driven storytelling, and pairing that experience with the superhero elements of Miraculous could make for something pretty cool.

There's no release date yet, but it'll be interesting to see how this project comes together, particularly when it comes to casting Marinette and Adrien.
