MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8 Delayed Again After Major Budget Setback With Almost $25 Million Submarine Stunt Malfunction

Tom Cruise’s next outing as one of his most famous characters, Ethan Hunt, in the eighth MI film, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two, has been hit by yet another setback.

The film has been shooting since 2022, and was first expecting a 2024 release, but after the strikes that took place last summer, a May 2025 date was assigned. Now, a mishap with a submarine is the latest issue on set.

According to Mirror, a malfunction has happened with a submarine on set of the film which will cost £23million (almost $25million American).

Sources say the gimbal, which is used to lower the 120ft-high structure, jammed under its weight and had to be repaired. This has put filming back weeks and bumped up costs. A source said: “They’re not happy as it puts production behind, which costs a lot of money per day.”

Production hit problems once they started adding fittings and stairwells to the empty sub shell and realized the contraption holding it could not tolerate the weight. Insiders say the repairs are ongoing.

Cruise, 61, brought Mission: Impossible, a hit TV series from the ‘60s, to the big screen in 1996. The last installment, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, also starring Hayley Atwell, was out last summer and featured a submarine that is blown up and sinks. The next offering will revisit the submarine 10 years later.

Hopefully this isn’t too major of a setback time-wise, and they will still be able to get the film into theaters a year from now. Stay tuned for updates.
