MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Director Brian De Palma Didn't Think The Film Needed Any Sequels
The original 1996 Mission: Impossible film is still my number one favorite in the franchise. I loved that movie when I first saw and I’ve enjoyed seeing how the franchise has evolved over the years with all the sequels. This has been a super fun franchise to watch! But, according to original director Brian De Palma, he didn’t think the first film needed any sequels.
De Palma recently spoke to AP News and in that interview, he revealed why he wasn't involved with the sequels, saying:
"Stories, they keep making them longer and longer only for economic reasons. After I made Mission: Impossible, Tom [Cruise] asked me to start working on the next one. I said: ‘Are you kidding?’ One of these is enough. Why would anybody want to make another one?
"Of course, the reason they make another one is to make money. I was never a movie director to make money, which is the big problem of Hollywood. That’s the corruption of Hollywood."
I get what he’s trying to say and I understand where he’s coming from, but at the same time, the sequels that have been made have been great! The fact that the films in the franchise continue to make a lot of money tells us that audiences are still enjoying them. Also, I think the stories that are being told in these movies are great, and as long as there’s still a good story to tell, that’s all that matters. But, then on top of that, you have the crazy awesome action! This is one of the few well-rounded franchises that continues to pump out good solid movies.
Because I’m such a big fan of the first film, I would have loved to see what De Palma would have done with a sequel!
