MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS Season 3 Is Getting a Major Overhaul With New Titans and a New Creative Team
Big changes could be coming to Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and it sounds like the MonsterVerse series may be getting a major overhaul for Season 3. After spending two seasons exploring the world of Godzilla and King Kong, the show could shift its attention to an entirely different group of Titans.
Apple TV and Legendary Television are reportedly looking to reinvent the series with a new creative team and a fresh direction. However, there's a catch. Season 3 hasn't officially been greenlit, so the show's future remains uncertain.
The plan involves bringing in new writers and finding a replacement for showrunner Chris Black, who co-created Monarch: Legacy of Monsters alongside Matt Fraction, an executive producer on the first season.
It's unclear whether the changes will extend to the cast or if the existing characters will continue their stories. There's also no explanation for why Apple TV wants to make such a significant creative shift.
One of the biggest questions concerns Godzilla and Kong. Both monsters have played important roles in the series, but their involvement in a potential third season is now up in the air. It's possible Legendary wants to keep its two biggest monsters focused on the theatrical side of the franchise, especially with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova on the way.
Of course, the MonsterVerse has plenty of other creatures worth exploring, and giving some of those Titans more attention could be a cool way to expand the mythology.
Season 2 certainly left the door open for more stories. The latest chapter brought the characters back to Kong's Skull Island, introduced a mysterious village connected to a powerful sea Titan, and continued exploring the consequences of Monarch's secrets across multiple generations.
The season also introduced Rodan, creating another possible direction for the story while leaving several major questions unanswered.
The series originally followed a family investigating its connection to Monarch after Godzilla's devastating battle in San Francisco exposed the existence of giant monsters to the world. That personal story helped connect the human characters to the larger MonsterVerse mythology.
Whether those characters remain part of the show under a new creative team is anyone's guess. Meanwhile, the franchise's television expansion is moving forward with a separate Monarch spin-off starring Wyatt Russell as a younger Colonel Lee Shaw.
Set in 1984, the series will follow Shaw as he attempts to stop the Soviets from unleashing a destructive new Titan. Joby Harold is serving as showrunner and continues to develop multiple projects set within the MonsterVerse.
On the movie side, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is scheduled to hit theaters on March 26, 2027. The upcoming film stars Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Sam Neill, and Dan Stevens, who returns as veterinarian Trapper Beasley from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
As for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, its future depends on whether Apple TV and Legendary can find the right creative team and a direction they're happy with. If those pieces don't come together, Season 2 could end up being the show's final chapter.
I'd like to see the series continue, especially if it means bringing some lesser-known Titans into the spotlight. Godzilla and Kong are great, but there's a whole world of monsters out there that could make for some awesome stories.
What do you think? Would you rather see Monarch: Legacy of Monsters continue following its original characters, or would you be interested in a fresh story centered on new Titans?
