MONOPOLY Movie To Shoot This Summer, Cast & Director Announcements Coming Soon

Movie Monopoly by Ben Pearson

Remember when board game movies were all the rage in Hollywood? There was a time a few years ago when it looked like we were going to see an influx of board game films make their way into theaters, but thankfully most of them fell apart after the failure of Battleship. (Pour one out for the Candy Land movie starring Adam Sandler.) At one point there were talks of Ridley Scott directing a Monopoly film, and while that idea sounded totally nuts, that particular project is still moving forward - though without the legendary filmmaker involved.

Collider recently spoke with producer Randall Emmett, who revealed that Monopoly has been quietly gaining steam:

“We've worked on the script for about nine months, we now have a script that we’re going to go make this summer.”

Production will likely take place in Georgia or Louisiana, with some major exterior work done on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. (Will that be the famous "Boardwalk" from the game?) As for who will direct the project, Emmett said:

“[For] the director, we’re on a shortlist of a few names, and we’re beyond excited about whichever of these directors ends up coming together.  The cast is young kids but there is one lead, older—a guy chasing kids, lets say.”

The guys at Collider mentioned that plot sounded a little like The Goonies, and the producer indicated that's the vibe they're going for with this film:

“That’s a perfect analogy to what Monopoly will hopefully be.  There is a treasure map…It’s a family adventure film. We really spent a lot of time on the script really trying to create family fun for everybody."

I'm just surprised this movie is still in the works at all. Emmett also said that we can expect an official announcement of a director, cast, and a logline in the beginning of February, so it looks like we won't have much longer to wait to see who is going to be bringing this story to the big screen. If it's a team like Phil Lord and Chris Miller, or someone with an interesting visual style, then this might not be a disaster of an idea. I'm trying to be optimistic, but we'll see who ends up being associated with this one.
