MONSTERS, INC. 2's Scrapped Script Would've Married Off Mike Wazowski and Brought Boo Back

Pixar fans have spent years wondering what a true Monsters, Inc. sequel could've looked like. While we eventually got the prequel Monsters University, plenty of people were hoping to see what happened after Sulley took over Monsters, Inc. and whether Boo would ever find her way back to the monster world.

As it turns out, one canceled version of Monsters, Inc. 2 had some pretty fun ideas, including giving one of the franchise's most beloved characters a major life milestone.

Speaking with TheWrap, writers Bob Hilgenberg and Rob Muir opened up about the sequel they wrote for Disney's now-defunct Circle 7 Animation studio. Their script, titled Lost in Scaradise, would've taken the story in some surprising directions.

One of the biggest reveals is that Mike Wazowski was set to get married. At the same time, Sulley would've been promoted within Monsters, Inc., continuing his journey after becoming the company's leader at the end of the original film.

The story also would've delivered something fans had wanted since 2001, bringing back an older Boo, who returns to the monster world to reconnect with the two monsters who once looked after her.

Muir spoke fondly of the experience of writing the project, saying: “We stand by that script, we’re very proud of it. It’s one of those things where, when we were writing it, everything was falling into place. It was a labor of love and were very passionate about it.”

He continued by explaining how closely they tried to match Pixar's storytelling style: “We wanted to make sure we stuck with the Pixar brand. Our goal was, when somebody read the script, to not know if we were influenced by Pixar or not.”

After Monsters, Inc. became a massive hit in 2001, earning more than $560 million worldwide on a reported $115 million budget, Disney wanted to move ahead with a sequel alongside

Pixar. At the time, though, the two companies were still separate, and growing tensions between them eventually led Disney to launch its own animation division, Circle 7.

That's when Hilgenberg and Muir were hired to develop Monsters, Inc. 2. Unfortunately, those plans came to an end after Disney acquired Pixar. Circle 7 was shut down, and the sequel script was shelved before it ever had a chance to move forward.

Even after all these years, the writers haven't given up hope that some of their ideas could eventually find a home in the franchise.

As Muir joked: “Call Pixar, tell them to make our version. Show up with signs – Bob and Rob’s draft!”

Interestingly enough, this old sequel pitch has resurfaced at a time when the franchise may finally be getting another chapter. Earlier this year, reports claimed that Disney and Pixar are developing a new Monsters, Inc. sequel.

While it has reportedly been referred to internally as Monsters, Inc. 3, Disney hasn't officially confirmed the title.

Whether Mike ever gets that wedding or Boo finally reunites with Sulley remains to be seen, but it's hard not to imagine how different the series might've been if Lost in Scaradise had made it to the big screen.
