Egyptian writer and director Mohamed Diab is making his English-language debut in the upcoming Marvel series Moon Knight that is set to see Oscar Isaac debut his superhero skills as “Marc Spector, a former Marine turned mercenary who uses his multiple personalities to fight crime.” Ethan Hawke is also starring in the series that is helping to form part of the MCU’s Phase Four. This project came at a pivotal time in Diab’s life, as he had relocated to the United States and was facing a push to get his projects into the American scene, just before an impending pandemic.

But he got a call out of the blue from Marvel Studios, asking if he’d like to pitch an idea for the Moon Knight series they were looking to make. So he and his writer/producer wife, Sarah Goher, got to work and created a 200-page pitch that they were sure of. Diab told THR:

“Honestly, it was a great pitch. The moment we finished it I told Sarah that if we didn’t get this job, something was wrong.”

Of course, they did get the job, and Diab officially joined the Marvel family in October 2020. The director went on to talk about his experience so far on the six-month shoot:

“It’s been such a great experience — I’m learning a lot. I’m appreciating things more about my independent movies, and I’m appreciating things about the big machine. I can’t compare Marvel to anything else, but it’s a great machine. Those guys are geniuses.”

The series is about a month out from wrapping, and Diab is directing four of the six episodes, as well as executive producing. Moon Knight is set to hit Disney+ sometime in 2022, so we should be hearing more pretty soon. Are you excited for this series?
