MOON KNIGHT’s MCU Future Hinges on One Big Thing and It’s All About Oscar Isaac
The future of Moon Knight in the MCU is still one big question mark, but a new update from head writer Jeremy Slater sheds some light on what’s going on behind the scenes.
If you’ve been wondering why we haven’t seen Oscar Isaac suit up again as Marc Spector, Steven Grant, or Jake Lockley, it turns out the answer is pretty simple… and also a little complicated.
When Moon Knight dropped, it didn’t play by the usual Marvel rules. Instead of leaning heavily on the wider MCU, it carved out its own eerie, psychological corner of the universe.
The series pulled in strong reviews, big viewership numbers, and even landed multiple award nominations. But despite all that momentum, the character has been sitting on the sidelines ever since.
Slater recently opened up about why, saying: “The contract Oscar Isaac signed was very much like, we will do more stories when we find stories that he is creatively excited to tell.
“They can just sort of snap their fingers and summon him back for another adventure. He’s really creatively involved in the future of that character.
“So I would imagine part of the challenge, and part of the joy over there, is finding: what stories does Oscar want to explore, and how does he want that character to be used? What’s something that would entice him to get back and play in that sandbox one more time?”
That’s the key. Isaac isn’t locked into showing up whenever Marvel Studios calls. He’s got creative input, and if the story doesn’t click, it doesn’t happen. That kind of arrangement is rare in the MCU, especially for a character with this much potential.
Season 1 wrapped up most of its story, but it also left a major thread dangling with the reveal of Jake Lockley. That third personality is still out there doing Khonshu’s dirty work, and that feels like a door Marvel hasn’t closed yet. A second season could easily dive into that chaos if they find the right angle.
There’s also a bigger wildcard in play. With the long-gestating Blade project seemingly stuck in development hell, Marvel may be shifting gears.
There are reports of a Midnight Sons project, which would bring together supernatural heavy hitters like Blade, Moon Knight, Ghost Rider, and Doctor Strange. That kind of crossover could be exactly the kind of story that pulls Isaac back in.
Slater, however, made it clear he’s not in the loop anymore. “You know, if they did a second season, I doubt I would be creatively involved. I don’t have any inside information in terms of where the character is.
“I haven’t talked to Marvel in three years at this point. I don’t know. Is there gonna be a Moon Knight movie? Is there gonna be a Midnight Sons movie? Is there gonna be a season 2? I’m as much in the dark as everyone else.”
Still, he sounds hopeful, saying: “Very hopeful and optimistic that we will see him again at some point, because I think he [Isaac] had fun, you know. He was proud of it and was happy that a lot of fans responded positively. So, I would be surprised if we didn’t see him again, but that’s just me speculating as a fan.”
At the end of the day, Moon Knight isn’t gone. It’s just waiting for the right story, and if Marvel nails that, Isaac coming back feels less like a question and more like a matter of timing.
Meanwhile, Slater is keeping busy with Mortal Kombat II, which hits theaters on May 8.
