MORBIUS Director Daniel Espinosa Reacts To The Negative Reviews
As you know, Sony’s vampire Marvel movie Morbius is not being received well by audiences and fans. Most of the reviews and reactions to the movie have been pretty harsh because the movie is a complete mess. You’d think that some of these reviews have made it to the film’s director, Daniel Espinosa, but he’s been trying to avoid them. In a recent interview with ComicBook, the director was asked about the reviews, and this is what he said:
"I mean, I try not to. I just ask my friends to send me the ones that they think are clever. I mean, good or bad. And then I get a bunch of clever stuff and the stuff that my friends don't think is clever, maybe it's just healthy for me to read. So, it is that. You make a movie that is supposed to be public. I mean, it's part of the fundamental concept of what you're doing, but it's always very strange."
Regardless of the bad reviews, Morbius has a successful first weekend and took in almost $40 million domestically. Worldwide, it made more than $80 million. Sure, a lot of people were interested in seeing what this movie was all about. Fans like myself hoped it would be good because Morbius is such a great Marvel character, and then there are the fans going to see the movie that are just want to see the train wreck.
While some of the blame of the film being so bad falls on the director, a lot of the blame also has to be distributed to the studio executives that don’t know what they’re doing when it comes to filmmaking and storytelling.
I hope that the team who made this movie does read the reviews so that they can see everything that they did wrong and make an effort to not make those same mistakes again. They need to see that they actually have to pay attention to detail and story structure to make a good movie.
