MORTAL KOMBAT 2 Promises Brutal Fatalities, Shocking Deaths and Will Have Fans “Happy, Shocked, and Really Pissed Off”
The 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot brought the legendary video game franchise roaring back to life with a bloody, R-rated spectacle that a lot of fans. Now, the highly anticipated sequel, Mortal Kombat II, is leveling up the carnage, finally delivering the all-out tournament that audiences have been waiting to see on the big screen.
This time around, the champions of Earthrealm, led once again by Lewis Tan’s Cole Young, will face the forces of Outworld under the rule of the fearsome Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). The cast features fan-favorite fighters, including Karl Urban as the cocky action hero Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.
But if you’re already picking favorites, you might want to hold off because not everyone is going to survive this tournament.
“They should be worried for everyone, to be honest,” Tan told ComicBook. “In different versions of the script, different people died. I was like, ‘No way.’ Then, they changed it and switched it. By the end of it, nobody is safe. Anybody could die… and there are a lot of fatalities in the second movie.
“If your favorite character dies, it’s not the end. Death is only the beginning. Don’t be too upset, but there are a lot of fatalities. Some people are going to be happy and some are going to be really p-ssed off.”
Tan’s Cole Young, an MMA fighter and descendant of Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), returns to continue his journey after discovering his powers in the first film. This time, though, Cole will be right in the thick of the action, starring in what Tan describes as one of the sequel’s most significant and brutal fight scenes.
“I do have an epic fight in Mortal Kombat II. I can’t tell you who it is with, but when you know who it is with, you will know why it’s so epic,” Tan said. “It is in one of my favorite video game locations.
“I was super-grateful to get that location because it’s such a cool design. That one took about three weeks to film, which is a long time. The style of the fight is very unique. You’ll get to see some moves you didn’t see in the first one, some character special moves.
“When the first movie ends, Cole had just discovered these new powers. You will see some new stuff that is very cool. It’s a fan-favorite fight, for sure. We shot that baby over three weeks.”
And fans can expect the brutality to be turned all the way up. Tan teased that the upcoming battles won’t just be more elaborate, they’ll be absolutely savage. “I think it is one of the bloodiest, bone-crunching fights out of all of them,” he added. “It’s definitely top three.”
With a full tournament, fan-favorite fighters, and the promise of some jaw-dropping fatalities, Mortal Kombat II sounds like it’s shaping up to be the violent, high-stakes showdown the franchise deserves.
Mortal Kombat II will hit theaters on May 8, 2026.
