MORTAL KOMBAT Screenwriter Greg Russo Is Trying to Get a Horror-Fueled BIOSHOCK Movie Off the Ground
The screenwriter of the new Mortal Kombat movie Greg Russo has been actively trying to get a film adaptation of BioShock into development. In a recent interview with CB, he says that “he’s been elbowing everybody” about bringing this video game property to the big screen, and he really wants to lean into the horror aspect of the game.
“I would love to figure out a way to do BioShock and I’ve tried. I've been like elbowing everybody I can possibly find, because I think I have a really awesome way to do it that would be really fun.”
He went on to say that he wants to bring “the horror of it to the forefront and [to] hopefully keep the budget at a manageable price.”
I’m sure many of you remember when Gore Verbinski was developing an R-rated version of BioShock for Universal Pictures. He was developing the project for years until the studio shut it down due to its massive budget. They didn’t want to invest a crazy amount of money in an R-rated adaptation of the game. It’s the same reason why they shut down Guillermo Del Toro’s At The Mountains of Madness.
I’m a big fan of the BioShock franchise, and I would love to see a movie finally get made! I’m sure that one day it’ll happen, but it will come at the right place, at the right time, with the right talent. Will Russo be the one to push it forward? Maybe if the Mortal Kombat movie he’s working on turn out to be a big hit, he will get the opportunity to develop the film.
How would you like to see a BioShock movie handled?
