MORTAL KOMBAT Writer Greg Russo to Write and Direct Film Adaptation of the Video Game SYSTEM SHOCK
Mortal Kombat writer Greg Russo may not be working on the sequel that was recently announced, but he’s got a project of his own that he’s working on. He is set to write and direct a live-action film adaptation of Nightdive Studios’ action video game franchise System Shock.
The movie is being produced for Binge.com, which is an upcoming gaming entertainment streaming platform where it will stream exclusively. The original game “plunges players into Citadel Station in the year 2072, where an unnamed hacker wakes from a coma only to be confronted by murderous robots, killer cyborgs, malicious mutants, and a malevolent AI named SHODAN that seeks to control Earth.”
Russo said in a statement: “I’m honored to have the opportunity to work alongside the fantastic team at Binge and Nightdive Studios to bring the iconic System Shock franchise to life. I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to make my directorial debut, and I finally found it.”
Binge Chief Content Officer Allan Ungar added: “Greg is a superbly talented screenwriter who possesses an unmatched knowledge and passion for gaming. His artistic approach to storytelling and his deep understanding of the source material will undoubtedly get fans excited about this new franchise. We’re thrilled to be bringing him on board and can’t wait to share his vision with audiences worldwide.”
I’m not really familiar with the System Shock video game franchise. As for Russo, the only thing that he’s worked on that’s been released so far is Mortal Kombat, which wasn’t very good. Maybe this will end up being a better project for him.
Russo has also adapted a number of video games into film and television including Space Invaders for New Line and Warner Bros., and Saints Row for director F. Gary Gray.
