Movie Adaptation of Broadway's WICKED Gets Release Date
Universal’s movie adaptation of Broadway’s hugely popular hit musical Wicked has been given a holiday release date of December 22, 2021. Stephen Daldry (The Reader, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) is set to direct, with Marc Platt (La La Land, Mary Poppins Returns) producing.
The three-time Tony-award winning musical was adapted from a book by Gregory Maguire. The show tells the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West, from L. Frank Baum’s original story, The Wizard of Oz. Against the backdrop of Oz, including some of the old characters we know and love, we learn what happened before Dorothy ever entered. The music is incredible, and the story is full and captivating.
We were originally supposed to have a December 2019 release date, but the studio decided to do its live-action stage to screen adaptation of the musical Cats first. So we will be seeing that in theaters this year, with Wicked following in two years. Wicked is set to premiere two new songs. We have no news yet on casting, but will keep you posted. I am incredibly excited to see this movie, as the show has become a favorite of mine.
