Movie Dream Team: CAPTAIN N
Welcome to the first episode of Movie Dream Team. This will be a column where we write about comic stories, old cartoons, toys, or TV shows we wish Hollywood would make a movie about and give our dream team for whatever we are making. Going over casting, director choice, storyline, and reason why we would want to make it. Our first Movie Dream Team is one of my own personal dreams I've had for years: a live action Captain N: Adventures in Videoland movie.
For those unfamiliar with Captain N, here is a brief summary. Young Kevin Keene is an avid video game player. He is the best at what he does, and what he does has little effect on the world around him. Until, however, he gets sucked into his television/Nintendo and has to save the world of Videoland! Videoland is an amalgamation of Nintendo Worlds including Donkey Kong, Castlevania, Metroid, and Zelda. Kevin has to team up with the likes of Megaman, Simon Belmont, Kid Icarus, Princess Lana, and many other Super Nintendo characters to save the world from the likes of the evil Mother Brain and King Hippo. Kevin Keane dons the name Captain N and uses his weapon, the NES controller and the NES zapper to take on the enemies of Videoland.
Basically, it was a tv show to pimp all the games coming out for the Nintendo and Super Nintendo game systems, and to be honest, it had some pretty terrible moments. But I have always loved the idea of exploring mixed worlds. It is partly why Super Smash Bros is one of my favorite games. So the question is: what would you make this movie about?
The Plot
If there's anything I've learned in the 20 something years I've lived, its A: Taylor Lautner is the worst living human being on the face of the planet, and B: video game movies never work. That's largely due to people trying to retell the Video Game story without the fun and exploration you get when you play video games. But Captain N isn't necessarily a video game. Its- a cartoon based on a multitude of video games. So my idea is come up with a whole new story all together, to use the characters and tell the epilogue story.
Start the film with a young band of heroes including Mega man, Simon Belmont, Samus, Princess Lana, Kid Icarus, and Captain N defeating the Evil Mother Brain once and for all. The triumphant heroes all go back to their respective lives. Captain N returns to the human world with Princess Lana, because they so obviously love each other and want to start a life together, Samus takes over ruling duties in Videoland with Kid Icarus as her trusted aide, and Simon and Mega decide to try out life in the real world as well seeing their respective enemies have been slain. They all are happy and naive, and then it cuts to 10 years later. Kevin Keane works at a Best Buy or a film equivalent, now broken up with Lana. Think about it. He spent all his time on video games only to eventually live in a world where video games do little to help you get a real job. Sure, he saved a whole other dimension, but that doesn't help you in a job interview. The story progresses to reveal that a part of Mother Brain survived in Videoland and now wants to break free and take over our world. Cut to a billionaire teenage heiress who decides to spend millions into a new Virtual Reality Console that syncs with your brain. She tests a prototype and has her mind invaded by Mother Brain. Mother Brain now exists in our world with the body of a hot, powerful, daughter of a billionaire, and she's out for revenge on the ones who stopped her the first time. Kid Icarus catches wind of this in Videoland and finds a way to our world to warn Kevin Keane and the rest of the gang. It's up to Kevin Keane to gather the group back together and get back in fighting condition to battle the Evil Mother Brain but on totally different terms.
It's a completely different kind of video game movie. For one, you get to see how video game characters react to living in our world. Think Enchanted but 10 years later. Sure it's fun to see a fish out of water, but how many people have explored the fish remaining out of water for awhile? You have a beautiful video game princess who never had to deal with diet and the workforce now having to deal with trying to fit into her pants for her job at Starbucks. Or a super fighting robot with the body of a child who has an alcohol problem and gets into fights at bars. Plus, you get the hero who has no real world skills being forced into action once again. It's a story I don't think gets told too often but would be awesome. So many interesting parallels could be drawn. But what would really make this movie great is the perfect director.
The Director
If we are making a movie about video games existing in the real world, it will be a comedy that has an underlying theme of getting older and growing up, so then the choice of director for a movie like this is obvious. Edgar Wright. He has proven his comedy and unique ideas countless times, plus he has an eye for brilliant comic detail. With Scott Pilgrim he proved he had a good grasp on what makes video game ideas in movies cool, and in his Cornetto Trilogy he deals strongly with growing up and moving on in life. He is the perfect director in my mind for anything, but especially for a story like this, I'd want him to write and Direct.
The Cast
Now for a movie like this, there are so many different actors I'd want to use. However, because this is a dream cast, I'll go with ones from different points in their life, that actually could still work today.
Kevin Keane: Paul Rudd. This is one I've had in my mind for years, before Rudd became the huge success he is now. It all goes back to a little commercial for the Super Nintendo. Back in the '90s, Rudd was THE Super Nintendo kid. Part of me has kept that logged away and figured he is Kevin Keane. That commercial was him. He's just grown up now. Perfect for a story like this.
Princess Lana: Anna Kendrick. She is incredibly attractive and has already even played a princess, but the big selling point to her is that she's very down to earth. She seems like she could play a person plagued by modern day realities and have dreams of a world she once lived in. She's got the looks to be a princess, but the sarcasm, wit, and style to be a hero.
Megaman: Peter Dinklage. Before anyone starts: yes. He is short, and Megaman is short. But the reason is so much bigger than that. Dinklage has dry sarcasm down to a T. He could play the diminutive hero plagued by real life struggles. He would be hilarious as Megaman! His hand would turn into a blaster and he could shoot a guy out of a bar that he's drinking at. It's just too perfect.
Mother Brain: Jessica Walter/Dove Cameron. This is a two parter. For one, you'd need someone to Voice the actual Mother Brain, the evil brain creature who is controlling, shrill, bitter, and condescending. Who better than the voice of Mallory Archer and Lucille Bluthe? Cameron would play the body that Mother Brain is inhabiting. She needs to look young, dumb, and perky, but also be able to pull off the Jessica Walter-isms. My other choice for the body of Mother Brain was Bella Thorne. Both of them have good comedic timing and perkiness down. Ultimately, I went with the blonde because of the blonde factor. Plus, the inner dialogue between Walters and Cameron just seems like it would be hilarious.
Simon Belmont: Patrick Warburton. This is pretty obvious. Big, funny, lovable, and super heroic. It's just such a great choice, plus with as flamboyant as Simon Belmont is, I think it would be a little bit of a different character for Warburton that he could still pull off nicely.
Icarus: Anton Yelchin. He's sincere and hopeful, with a youthful voice and face. He'd be a great sidekick to the team who just wants to save the day. Whenever I see him in a movie, I want to root for him, and he always seems like he's got the odds stacked against him. Perfect for Kid Icarus.
Samus: Alice Eve. She's hot and determined. She could be a hero who was shifted into royalty while the rest of the heroes left. She seems like she could kick all sorts of butt, plus she's blonde, attractive, and ready to fight. It's not a huge role in the big scheme of things, but it's a good choice to show the differences between our world and the perfection of videoland
Eggplant Wizard: Paul Giamatti. He's the one who has the cult that resurrects mother Brain. He's her loyal minion, with maybe feelings and desires for more. He's nerdy, shy, a pushover, and in no shape to be fighting with physical prowess. Giamatti just seems like the perfect choice.
So there you have it. The first Movie Dream Team. I think it would be an awesome movie. With Wright at the helm and a slew of fantastic comedy actors, you'd have a great, action-packed comedy.
