Movie Marathons, Specials, and TV Shows: What to Watch This Holiday Weekend
Thanksgiving week is upon us, and that means it’s time to spend quality time with family or friends, eating a big meal, visiting, and probably sitting down in front of the TV at some point. A lot of people watch football on Thanksgiving and in the days that follow, as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but if you’re not much of a sports fan, or if you’re looking to mix it up, I’ve got some options for you.
-You can start out the day with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on CBS and NBC. With balloons of Bluey, Grogu, Goku, Pikachu, Snoopy, Boss Baby, Ryan’s World and Ada Twist Scientist, there’s something for everyone.
-Then there’s the 2022 National Dog Show, which airs on NBC at 12 p.m. E/T, P/T. The seven groups included in the show are Terrier, Toy, Working, Sporting, Hound, Herding, and Non-Sporting. The new breeds involved in this year’s show include the Russian Toy, Mudi, and Bracco Italiano.
-The true crime series Welcome to Chippendales starring Kumail Nanjiani begins this Tuesday, November 22, on Hulu in the US (the series doesn't premiere in the UK until January).
-The long-awaited series Wednesday finally premieres on Netflix, with the whole first season dropping on Wednesday, November 23.
-The Love, Lizzo documentary premieres on HBO Max on Thursday, November 24.
-TBS is running a Thanksgiving Friends marathon with back-to-back Thanksgiving-themed episodes of the sitcom from 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm ET/PT.
-The Andor season finale is set to air on Disney+ on Wednesday, November 23. For those who haven't watched the series yet, episodes 1 and 2 are airing on ABC on Wednesday, November 23, 9-10:30 pm ET/PT, and on FX on Thursday, November 24, 9-10:30 pm ET/PT, as well as being available to stream on Hulu for a week starting November 23.
-For those who haven’t watched yet, or fans looking for a re-watch, Paramount Network is doing a Yellowstone marathon, beginning at 11 am ET/PT on November 24 with the series premiere, and continuing throughout the course of the weekend.
-AMC is having a Godfather movie marathon on Thursday beginning at 6 am ET/PT, which will run for 24 hours back to back.
-A Back to the Future movie marathon is happening on Bravo, on Thanksgiving Day starting at 12 pm ET/PT.
-If you like Will Ferrell, TNT is the place to be. Beginning at 12 pm ET/PT, the network is airing Blades of Glory, Step Brothers and Elf in succession, ending at 6 pm ET/PT.
-Comedy Central is doing a split day with the morning full of Seinfeld episodes, and the afternoon airing The Office.
-On Wednesday, you can catch the classic John Candy movies The Great Outdoors and Planes, Trains and Automobiles on AMC a few times back to back.
-You can catch last year’s Saturday Night Live Thanksgiving special on Wednesday night on NBC that features the holiday’s best sketches from over the years.
-There will also be a brand new episode of America’s Funniest Home Videos on ABC on Thanksgiving night that will be dedicated to Thanksgiving.
-On Sunday, The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration at 8 p.m. on ABC. Hosted by brother-and-sister duo Derek and Julianne Hough, this special was filmed at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California. Run DMC, Jordin Sparks and Meghan Trainor are all set to perform some classic holiday tunes.
Tis the Season: The Holidays Onscreen at 8 p.m. on CNN. Holiday movies (The Holiday, Love Actually, and Elf, to name a few of my favorites) are as much a part of getting in the spirit of the season as putting up a tree or sipping on a Starbuck caramel brûlée latte. This program, produced by Tom Hanks, celebrates this genre of film and features interviews with celebrities, directors, producers, film critics to discuss why certain holiday movies and TV shows are so special.
Hopefully this list will give you a few options, and you can hunker down and watch with your loved ones and a piece of pie. Happy Thanksgiving, from all of us at GeekTyrant!
