MoviePass Is Set to Return on Labor Day and Here Are the Details

The original movie theater subscription service, MoviePass, is making its big comeback on Labor Day in beta form with a new tiered pricing system.

The revamped subscription service will launch on Thursday, August 25, with a waitlist posted on its website at 9 a.m. ET where people wanting to join the beta version can sign up.

It’s explained that the waitlist will be open for five days, and it will be free to sign-up on a first come, first served basis. “The first batch of successful applicants will be notified on Labor Day when they will be offered three subscription price tiers.”

The prices for the tiers include $10, $20, or $30 a month and “each subscription option will give the user credits to cash in each month to see movies. There will not be an unlimited viewing option during the service’s beta version.”

Most of the major theater chains have their own subscription services now, and because of that, and the shady history of MoviePass, I don’t think this is going to work. I subscribed to MoviePass when it first launched, but it was a hassle for various reasons. These movie theater subscription services are so much more stable. I won’t be ditching mine for MoviePass.

Mark Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas, the company behind HBO’s Emmy-nominated McMillions, is currently developing a documentary on the rise and fall of MoviePass. Will MoviePass rise again? Will you be signing up for MoviePass?
