Mr. Miyagi Will Still Be at the Heart of Karate Kid Reboot Series COBRA KAI
THR recently interviewed star of Karate Kid and Cobra Kai series, Ralph Macchio, as well as executive producer Jon Hurwitz about their new series and how they planned on including Pat Morita's iconic character Mr. Miyagi. Morita was the teacher and star alongside Macchio in the original trilogy, but sadly passed away in 2005, at the age of 73.
Macchio told THR at the Tuesday Night Premiere of Cobra Kai at New York's Tribeca Film Festival that, "We're not here without Pat Morita's performance in that film. The heart and soul of the Karate Kid universe are the teachings of Mr. Miyagi." He mentions that Mr. Miyagi's name will be used throughout the series, and there will be many reminders of him.
Executive producer, Jon Hurwitz, also went on to explain that they will also be using some footage from the original series that has never been seen before. That is incredibly exciting news! I have been a fan of the Karate Kid movies since I was a kid, and I am really excited for this new installment.
Cobra Kai will be available for streaming on YouTube Red starting May 2nd! Are you guys excited?
