MRS. DOUBTFIRE The Musical Is Coming to the Stage

It’s sort of like the remakes of the movies we grew up with as kids. Nobody asked for them, but they keep giving them to us. Same with the movie to musical adaptations we keep hearing about these days. But just like the movie remakes, the projects they choose to take to the stage are stories with major fanbases that should do well in the medium of theater. The latest musical to get the adaptation treatment is Mrs. Doubtfire.

We all know the story from the 1993 movie starring Robin Williams as a father going through a bitter divorce from his wife (Sally Field), who decides he doesn’t get to see his kids often enough and hates holding down a regular job, so he applies for the job of his children’s nanny, complete with prosthetics, fake teeth and hair, old lady clothes, and a British accent. It all works out great until he inevitably gets caught and everyone freaks out, but then his wife realizes that her kids actually do need to see their dad, and it all works out in the end. The real genius of the whole thing is all the improv and physical comedy brought to the role by Williams. The movie is good and funny, but I’m not sure that magic can be recaptured.

I guess we will find out this fall! Mrs. Doubtfire will premiere on stage in Seattle this November with an official opening night on December 13th, and is expected to have a Broadway run sometime next year. Is this a show you’re really excited about? Let us know below.
