MS. MARVEL Was Inspired by Edgar Wright's SCOTT PILGRIM, John Hughes Movies, and 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU
I think Marvel’s new series Ms. Marvel is great! I’m loving how they are handling the character and the story, and I like how the creative team is having fun with how the story is visually presented.
During a recent interview with /Film, head writer Bisha K. Ali talked about the main inspiration for the series and revealed to them that it was heavily influenced by Edgar Wright's 2010 Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, along with Spider-Man: Homecoming, John Hughes's classic 1980s high school comedies, and the 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.
You can totally see the influences of these films in this series! It’s not hard to recognize them while watching the series, it’s probably one of the many reasons why I’m enjoying the series so much! Of course, the show also wonderfully incorporates its own unique, heightened style.
Ali added, "And so there's so many of those different influences and elements we wanted to weave into the show, and I think we just did it. I think everybody all together got behind this huge melting pot of things that we wanted to include. And yeah, [Kamala Khan co-creator Sana Amanat] really pulled it all together for us."
It seems like Ali and the rest of the creative team who worked on this series succeeded in what they were hoping to accomplish. The first episode recently dropped on Disney+ and for the most part, fans seem to be loving it.
