MTV's SHANNARA CHRONICLES Excites Fans With a New Trailer

The very first trailer of The Shannara Chronicles debuted at San Diego Comic Con earlier this year. Now, just a few months later, New York Comic Con gives us yet another two minutes of what to expect in the MTV fantasy series which is based on the best-selling novels written by Terry Brooks.

Just as a reminder: The Shannara Chronicles was developed by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and stars Poppy Drayton, John Rhys-Davies, Austin Butler, Manu Bennett, and Ivana Baquero.

I can’t deny that finding out about this early Christmas present made me feel a bit too excited, as the previously released video managed to make quite an impression. It is true that MTV doesn't always succeed in creating something lasting and impressive. Yet, this time around their production seems to deploy just the right amount of emotion...at least in the first trailer. Picturesque views, enchanting characters, great music. Simply, it was all there. However, after watching the new clip couple of times, the originality of the over-arching story somehow begins to fade away. We have humans, dwarfs, elves, half-elves, dark creatures (demons), knights, rulers, and a sacred tree known as Ellcrys. All of the ingredients required for a good sci-fi/fiction narrative are in place – good characters, bad characters, tension, feelings, and an object that needs protection. So far, so good. But still I find it hard to ignore the fact that the 10-episode show merges ideas and worlds which can be seen in The Lord of the Rings and Avatar.

“There are dark days ahead,” but hopefully those dark days won’t be indicative of the show’s failure to meet the expectations of fans.
