MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Writer Addresses Those Tom Cruise Iron Man Rumors and Says He Did Ask if They Could Do It
As the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was shooting and gearing up for release, fans were speculating about the rumored characters they thought we might see in the movie. While I won’t name off the awesome new characters and cameos that did appear, in case you haven’t seen it yet, I will talk about one that didn’t make the cut.
One heavily rumored actor that fans thought we might have seen in the film was Tom Cruise as an alternate universe Tony Stark/Iron Man. This claim came partly because Cruise had been up for the role of Iron Man back when the first movie was made in 2008. So fans figured it would be fun to see him appear in the role in another universe, since that’s what this movie was set to dive into.
When the sequel’s writer, Michael Waldron, was asked by Rolling Stone if the rumors were based on fact, he replied:
“Yeah, that was totally made up. I mean, there’s no cut footage of Tom Cruise! But I love Tom Cruise, and I said to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] at one point, I was like, Could we get Tom Cruise’s Iron Man? I remember reading about that in Ain’t It Cool News back in the day, that Tom Cruise was going to be Iron Man.”
He went on to confirm that he actually got that idea from the fans, saying:
“Yeah, exactly. As it was being talked about online, I was like, Yeah, that’d be cool!”
He went on to say that it wouldn’t have worked out because Tom Cruise was shooting Mission Impossible 7 and 8 at the time. So it couldn’t have happened, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. The worst part is that I bet Cruise would have been down to do it if he’d been available! He’s a good sport. It’s a bummer that it didn’t work out, but we still got a pretty awesome movie anyway.
