MY HERO ONE'S JUSTICE 2 Features Fun Characters and Is Great for Fans of the Anime
Over the weekend, Bandai Namco released My Hero One’s Justice 2. If you’re a fan of arena fighting games and the hit anime series My Hero Academia, you’ll love this game. It features 40 playable characters including heroes and villains with all characters showing off their quirks. Bandai Namco was kind enough to send me a copy for the Nintendo Switch, and now I’ve got some thoughts to share.
The Story Mode is nothing unique or special really. You basically play through the story of the anime. One cool feature, though, is that some levels have side stories that feature a different part of the story. For example, one level is all about the room competition when the students move into the dorm and ends with a battle between Mina and Mineta. The alternate story is when Tsuyu talks to Deku and Bakugo about things. So far, I’ve noticed that one of the stories will typically only be a video, but that may change later down the road.
Mission Mode is a fun little addition in my opinion. Here you run a hero agency and send your team out to help protect the city. As you finish missions you’ll get money to hire additional characters to help you out. Also, when you go out for a mission, you can only heal by coming across items until the mission is over. This helps up the ante. As you fail missions, your heroes will lose morale and eventually they may leave you. Depending on the makeup of your team, members may even gain bonuses.
The fighting is pretty par for the course. I thought that this was a 3v3 fighter since you select three fighters, but it turns out that your sidekicks are more like assists in games like Marvel vs Capcom 2 or Pokken Tournament. It’s definitely a nice mix up as a lot of games these days are 3v3.
Also, it’s fun to see all the characters that have been included. My favorites from the anime are Momo, Jiro, and Tokoyami, and so it’s a lot of fun to be able to play as them. That being said, there are a lot of characters not in the game. I hope they keep adding this time instead of simply releasing a new game after a year. When are we going to get Midnight and Present Mic? Heck, I think it’d be fun to play as Nezu!
Honestly, my biggest complaint is the simple fact that the dialogue is all in Japanese. I like the dub of the MHA, and I could not find any way to change the settings for the voice work to be in English. This means I’m doing a lot more reading than I was hoping, and it’s not a big factor, but is kind of annoying. Another problem I have is that the game seems to hang in odd spots. Thankfully, it’s never during the actual fights, but it’s not great. I am chalking this one up to playing on the Nintendo Switch though, and am guessing the same problem doesn’t happen on other platforms.
All in all, if you’re a fan of MHA, I would highly recommend this game. If you like arena fighters then this is a good game. The Mission Mode is really what makes this game worth picking up in my opinion. I hope they continue to release characters and other content though. You can play My Hero One’s Justice 2 now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
