As the 2024 draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the incredible stories and unforgettable characters that graced our TV screens over the year.
Television continues to reach new heights, offering a diverse array of genres and narratives that kept me captivated. From thrilling adaptations of beloved video games and novels to heartfelt comedies, animated projects, and intense dramas, this year’s lineup of shows offered something for every kind of viewer.
I’m always on the lookout for shows that push boundaries, deliver compelling narratives, and leave a lasting impression. This year, we were treated to some great storytelling, incredible performances, and moments that I loved talking about with friends.
Whether it was an animated masterpiece, a gripping drama, or a show that simply made me laugh, these series stood out as the very best of what 2024 had to offer.
Here are my top 10 favorite TV shows of the year. The ones that resonated with me personally, entertained me in ways I didn’t expect, and made me fall in love with the art of storytelling all over again. Let’s dive in!
1. Arcane
In my opinion, Arcane is the best project based on a video game, live-action or animated, ever made. The show told such an incredible story with stunning visuals and emotional depth.
Every episode delivered pure greatness, blending epic action with heartfelt character development. The dynamic between sisters Jinx and Vi, set against the backdrop of the tensions between Piltover and Zaun, created a compelling and emotional rollercoaster.
2. The Penguin
This DC series took me on an insane journey into the underworld of Gotham City, and I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was. Honestly, I thought it was even better than The Batman movie!
Colin Farrell delivers an incredible performance as Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, as he battles for control of Gotham’s criminal empire in the power vacuum left after Carmine Falcone’s death.
With its gritty atmosphere, intense power plays, and riveting character dynamics, this show sets a new bar for DC storytelling.
3. Fallout
This is easily one of the best live-action video game adaptations ever made. It perfectly captures the bizarre, irradiated world of the games while telling a deeply engaging story. The contrast between the retro-futuristic optimism of pre-apocalypse America and the brutal realities of post-apocalyptic life is fascinating. The world-building is immaculate, and the mix of dark humor and heart-pounding tension kept me hooked from start to finish.
4. Shogun
This samurai epic, based on James Clavell’s novel, is an incredible viewing experience. The attention to detail in bringing this story to life is astounding.
The 1600s Japan setting, political intrigue, and cultural clashes between Lord Toranaga, John Blackthorne, and Toda Mariko make for a gripping narrative.
Every episode felt like a beautifully crafted piece of art, and Hiroyuki Sanada’s performance as Toranaga was especially powerful.
5. Nobody Wants This
This romantic comedy delivered pure joy with every episode. Kristen Bell and Adam Brody shine as Joanne and Noah, an agnostic podcast host and a rabbi on the rebound, whose unlikely romance is both hilarious and heartwarming.
The show’s mix of quirky humor and genuine emotional depth made it one of my favorite feel-good series of the year.
6. Shrinking
This show is like comfort food for the soul. Jason Segel plays a grieving therapist who starts breaking the rules in his practice, leading to heartfelt and often hilarious consequences.
Harrison Ford’s portrayal of Paul, a senior therapist dealing with Parkinson’s, adds to the depth of the story and humanity. The show’s ability to balance humor and emotion makes it a standout for me.
7. Creature Commandos
James Gunn absolutely knocked it out of the park with Creature Commandos! This animated series about a team of incarcerated monsters sent on deadly missions is an absolute blast.
The insane character dynamics and Gunn’s signature mix of heart and humor make it a thrilling and fun watch. I can’t wait to see where this wild ride takes us next.
8. Landman
The cutthroat madness of the oil industry and all the factors that go into running it are fascinating to me, and Landman delivers a thrilling and frustrating look at this world.
Billy Bob Thornton is phenomenal as he navigates the upstairs-downstairs dynamic of roughnecks and billionaires. This modern-day tale of fortune-seeking in the oil boomtowns of West Texas is both thought-provoking and compelling.
9. Star Wars: The Bad Batch
The final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch delivers an emotional, tightly paced conclusion to Clone Force 99’s journey. As they fight to reunite with Omega, who faces her own trials in an Imperial lab, the group must overcome immense challenges, forge unexpected alliances, and push their limits like never before.
The stakes are high, the missions are daring, and the storytelling is sharp, making this season a thrilling and heartfelt farewell to these beloved characters.
10. Masters of the Air
As a longtime fan of Band of Brothers and The Pacific, Masters of the Air delivered another incredible story. The series captures the bravery and struggles of the American bomber boys during World War II as they brought the fight to Hitler’s doorstep.
The aerial combat scenes were breathtaking, and the human stories were deeply moving, making it one of the year’s standout dramas for me.
Whether you’re into action-packed adaptations, heartfelt comedies, or gripping historical dramas, this year offered some great shows.
