Naomi Watts to Star in Dog Movie THE FRIEND Based on Hit Novel

Oscar nominee Naomi Watts (The Impossible, Birdman) is set to star in the film adaptation of The Friend, based on Sigrid Nunez’s hit book about a woman’s bond with her Great Dane. Nunez’s 2018 novel, which won the U.S.’s National Book Award For Fiction, follows “the story of a writer who adopts a Great Dane that belonged to a deceased friend and mentor. The story covers love, friendship, grief and healing. Watts will star with Great Dane, Bing.”

Scott McGehee and David Siegel (Montana Story) will direct the film, based on the screenplay they adapted.

This sounds like it will end up being an impossibly sad movie that I won’t be able to get through. I love animals so much that when a dog movie is presented to me, I know by now that I probably won’t be able to handle it. But I bet normal people might like it.

Watts can next be seen in the Netflix limited horror series The Watcher, Amazon’s mystery thriller remake of Goodnight Mommy, and the survival drama Infinite Storm.
