Natalie Portman Says King Charles Asked Her at the PHANTOM MENACE Premiere if She Was in the Original Trilogy, She Replied, "No, I'm 18!"
Natalie Portman plays an important role in the Star Wars lore, that of Queen Padmé Amidala, wife of Anakin Skywalker and mother of Luke and Leia. We met her in the prequel films, beginning with Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, in which she played a teenage Queen of Naboo who first met the child Anakin before their relationship, and his eventual turn to the dark side. But before the world knew the whole prequel story and Portman synonymous with her Star Wars role, she was able to attend the first film’s premiere, and was able to meet royalty from right here on planet Earth.
Portman recalled meeting the now King Charles in a recent interview on Watch What Happens Live to promote her buzzy Netflix drama May December. When asked by host Andy Cohen what it was like meeting the British royal family at The Phantom Menace premiere, Portman recalled: “I remember Prince Charles, he was then Prince Charles, asked me if I was in the originals. I was like, ‘No, I’m 18!’ But he was very friendly.”
Portman said “no one has asked” her about returning to the Star Wars franchise, but “I’m open to it.” She said working on the prequel trilogy was “amazing,” adding, “It was the first time I worked digitally. I don’t think anyone was shooting that way then. It was my first time working with a green screen. It was a whole new set of skills to pick up and a whole new world to enter.”
It would be tricky bringing Portman’s character back to the Star Wars universe, but stranger things have happened. Would you like to see her return?
