Natalie Portman's Jane Foster Will Be Known as Mighty Thor in THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, Not Female Thor

Ever since it was announced that Natalie Portman would be reprising her role as Jane Foster in director Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder and that she would be the new Thor, fans and articles have been referring to her as “Female Thor.” Yes, I’m guilty of it too.

Well, the director of the film is correcting that term and in response to a fan on Twitter, he said that she will be known as Mighty Thor, not Female Thor. You can read that little Twitter exchange below.

There’s no point in arguing about this because he’s right. After all, the version of Thor that Natalie Portman is playing is based on the comic book run by Jason Aaron, which is called Mighty Thor.

You see, in the comic book story arc Thor is no longer worthy to wield Mjolnir, so he is called “Odinson,” not Thor. Jane Foster takes over and become the Mighty Thor. There can only be one Thor at a time and in this instant, Jane Foster is the only one worthy to carry the name.

There’s a long story between Thor and Odinson in the comics. I have no idea how this Thor: Love and Thunder movie is going to play out or what story elements they will use, modify, and cut out, but in the comics Odinson eventually becomes worthy to be Thor again, and Jane ends up becoming the new Valkyrie.

I’m super stoked about this next chapter of Thor! It will be set before the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so I’m sure we’ll get a little backstory on his short journey with them. I bet the Guardians just get sick and tired of him and ditch him somewhere in the universe. I just can’t wait to see Portman as Thor! That’s gonna be awesome.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder movie, which will hit theaters on November 5, 2021.
