Paramount Movies has released the first trailer for the upcoming thriller, which stars Nathalie Emmanuel as a woman whose grief quickly spirals into something much more terrifying after she accepts help from her late husband's estranged relatives.
While it doesn't exactly reinvent the psychological horror formula, the trailer leans into the kind of unsettling atmosphere that should keep fans of the genre interested.
Emmanuel stars as Stella, a pregnant widow who is invited to stay at her deceased husband's sprawling family estate while she recovers.
At first, the family's hospitality seems genuine, but it doesn't take long before something feels very wrong. Their fascination with Stella's unborn baby grows increasingly disturbing, and what starts as an offer of shelter slowly becomes a nightmare she can't escape.
As the story unfolds, Stella finds herself trapped inside the estate, forced to remain there until she gives birth. With everyone around her acting suspiciously, she's left questioning whether there's really something sinister surrounding her unborn child or if grief and isolation are pushing her toward a complete mental breakdown.
Watching the trailer, it's hard not to think of a mashup of Get Out, Rosemary's Baby, and Ready or Not. Those comparisons are easy to make, even if Confinement appears to be putting its own spin on familiar ideas with an increasingly unhinged family dynamic.
One thing the preview makes clear is that Stella has wandered into a house full of people who are completely off their rocker.
Joining Emmanuel is Ben Cura, Eloise Lovell Anderson, Charlie Hiscock, and Claire Forlani, rounding out the mysterious household that turns Stella's search for comfort into a fight for survival.
Confinement is directed by Peter Howitt, whose previous films include Sliding Doors, Antitrust, Johnny English, Laws of Attraction, and more.
The trailer offers plenty of creepy imagery and escalating tension. Whether Confinement can rise above its familiar setup remains to be seen, but if you're in the mood for another psychological thriller where nobody can be trusted, this one may be worth checking out.
