Nathan Fillion Says Guy Gardner Is Becoming the ‘Fabric’ of the DCU
If the DCU needs somebody to keep popping up, causing trouble, and reminding everyone that this whole universe is connected, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner looks ready for the job.
After making his DCU debut in Superman, Fillion’s wonderfully obnoxious Green Lantern already has several more appearances lined up. Guy is headed to Lanterns, Mister Miracle, and eventually Man of Tomorrow, giving the bowl-cut superhero a surprisingly important place in James Gunn’s expanding DC Universe.
Fillion recently talked about Guy’s increasingly frequent appearances and how the character is starting to function as connective tissue between different corners of the DCU.
“Guy Gardner is becoming a part of the fabric of this universe,” Fillion said.
That’s a pretty interesting role for Gardner, especially since he doesn’t necessarily have to be the main character in these projects to make an impact. Fillion compared Guy to a “mile marker,” essentially describing him as a familiar character audiences can encounter as they move through different DCU stories.
It’s also a very Guy Gardner way to build connective tissue. Instead of relying exclusively on Batman, Superman, or another major hero to remind viewers that these stories share a universe, Gunn and company can send in the loudmouth Green Lantern with the terrible haircut.
Fillion sounds especially happy with how the Lanterns series turned out. He explained that Lanterns was aiming for a “tricky tone,” and when he initially heard what the creative team was trying to accomplish, he wasn’t entirely sure how they were going to make all of those ingredients work together.
After seeing the finished result, though, Fillion said they “nailed it” and described the series as “really good.”
That should be encouraging for Green Lantern fans who have been waiting a long time to see this mythology get another serious shot in live-action.
Fillion also seems to be having a blast with the fact that playing Gardner keeps opening doors into other DCU projects.
“I’m so lucky I get to play these fantastic characters, and then they say, ‘Oh, by the way, we’re gonna throw you in this other show.’ Turns out, it rocks,” Fillion shared.
One of those other projects is Mister Miracle, which gives Guy another opportunity to wander into a completely different section of the DC Universe.
We don’t know how substantial his involvement will be, but simply having Gardner show up helps reinforce the idea that these characters can cross paths without every appearance needing to become a giant crossover event.
That approach could end up being one of the more fun aspects of Gunn’s DCU. A shared universe feels more connected when characters naturally drift in and out of each other’s stories, rather than only meeting when the fate of existence hangs in the balance.
Guy Gardner is particularly well suited for that job. He’s instantly recognizable, he brings a strong personality wherever he goes, and Fillion can make even a smaller appearance memorable. He can be part of the larger DCU without every project suddenly becoming The Guy Gardner Show, although I’d absolutely watch that too.
There’s even more Guy coming after Lanterns and Mister Miracle. Fillion is also confirmed to reprise the role in the upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, which is currently set for release in 2027.
Before then, Lanterns kicks off on HBO with its first episode premiering August 16, 2026.
So, I guess we should probably get used to seeing that ridiculous bowl cut around the DCU. Guy Gardner may have started as one member of the Superman ensemble, but Fillion’s version of the Green Lantern is quickly becoming one of the characters helping stitch this universe together.
And considering how much personality Fillion brings to the role, that sounds like a pretty fun way to do it.
