Nathan Fillion's THE ROOKIE Renewed for Season 8

ABC has locked in The Rookie for an eighth season, keeping Nathan Fillion’s aging but unshakable LAPD officer on the job for another season.

The renewal is part of a bigger slate update from ABC, which also greenlit new seasons for Grey’s Anatomy (Season 22), 9-1-1 (Season 9), Will Trent (Season 4), and Shifting Gears (Season 2). This follows earlier pickups for Abbott Elementary and High Potential, with all of them joining the 2025-26 schedule.

The Rookie recently hit a new high, pulling in 8.25 million viewers in three days, which is its biggest audience since early 2023. And its run on Hulu is keeping it fresh with the binge crowd. That momentum’s clearly working in its favor.

The series picks up with Nolan recovering from a gunshot wound while training two fresh recruits, Miles Penn (Deric Augustine) and Seth Ridley (Patrick Keleher). The core team’s back too, including Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan, Shawn Ashmore, and Lisseth Chavez.

Creator Alexi Hawley also has another spinoff in the works. The last one, The Rookie: Feds, only lasted a season, but it looks like the franchise is still alive and kicking.

The Rookie comes from Lionsgate Television and 20th Television, with Hawley executive producing alongside Mark Gordon, Nathan Fillion, Michelle Chapman, Bill Norcross, and Brynn Malone.

Season 8 is expected to clock in with 18 episodes, though ABC hasn't officially confirmed that.
