Nathan Lane Joins Showtime's PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS

Showtime just added another great actor to their Penny Dreadful: City of Angels series. Nathan Lane (The Lion King, The Birdcage, The Producers) is set to star alongside Daniel Zovatto and Natalie Dormer in the show.

Penny Dreadful creator, writer and executive producer John Logan is returning to develop the new series, which will be set in a completely different part of the world.

The new series is described as a “spiritual descendant of the story set in Victorian-era London”, and the next chapter will feature a new vision, new characters and storylines.

It opens in 1938 Los Angeles; a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Zovatto) is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

Lane is said to be playing a character named Lewis Michener. “A veteran officer in the LAPD, wise to the ways of the world and ruthless in pursuit of his goals, Lewis becomes Vega’s partner and mentor.” Lane is always fun to watch in the projects that he involves himself in and this is definitely going to be a different kind of character and project for him, which is cool.

Dormer will play a character named Magda, “a supernatural demon who can take the appearance of anyone she chooses and manifests in a number of guises throughout the story. Charismatic, clever and chameleonic, Magda is a dangerous enemy and an invaluable ally.”

It was also explained that the series is set in a “time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.”
